This study aimed to assess the effect of sorghum planting patterns on forage response and performance of beef heifers at finishing phase. The experimental period lasted 84 days; treatments consisted of the combination of two interrow spacings (22 and 44 cm) and two sorghum-sowing rates (12 and 24 kg ha ). Beef heifers, at finishing phase, with initial age of 15 months (± 2.3 months) and average body weight of 262 kg (± 37.95 kg), continuously grazed forage. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme with three repetitions per area. The different planting patterns did not affect (P > 0.05) dry matter production (5,447.78 kg DM ha ). Forage accumulation rate, leaf mass, forage mass, leaf supply and forage supply were influenced (P < 0.05) by time. Similar behavior was observed for stocking rate, weight gain per area unit and daily weight gain, with values of 1,172.32 kg of liveweight ha , respectively. Animal performance had no effect (P > 0.05) from planting patterns, with nearly 4.04 mm of subcutaneous fat thickness and final weight of 330.36 kg. Animal body development showed no significant differences (P > 0.05), with values for length, heart girth and hip height of 132.01, 163.75 and 126.75 cm, respectively. The weight to average height ratio between planting patterns was 2.67 kg cm ResumoObjetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de diferentes padrões de plantio do sorgo forrageiro na resposta forrageira e no desempenho produtivo de novilhas de corte em terminação. O período experimental teve duração 84 dias. Os tratamentos consistiram na combinação de dois espaçamentos entrelinhas (22 e 44 cm) e duas taxas de semeadura do sorgo (12 e 24 kg ha -1 ). Para o pastejo das forragens produzidas, foram utilizadas novilhas de corte, em fase de terminação, com idade média inicial de 15 meses (± 2,3 meses) e peso corporal médio de 262 kg (± 37,95 kg x 2. Os diferentes padrões de plantio não influenciaram (P > 0,05) na produção de matéria seca (5 447,78 kg de MS ha -1 ) e na taxa de acúmulo de matéria seca (58,47 kg de MS ha -1 dia -1 ). As variáveis taxa de acúmulo de forragem, massa de lâminas foliares, massa de forragem, oferta de lâminas foliares e oferta de forragem foram influenciados (P < 0,05) pelo avanço do período de utilização. Comportamentos similares foram observados para as variáveis: carga animal, ganho de peso por área e ganho de peso diário, com valores de 1172,32 kg de peso vivo ha -1 ; 312,31 kg ha -1 ; 0,891 kg dia -1 , respectivamente. O desempenho animal não foi influenciado (P > 0,05) pelos padrões de plantio do sorgo, obtendo-se, em média, 4,04 mm de espessura de gordura subcutânea e peso final de 330,36 kg. O desenvolvimento corporal dos animais não apresentou diferenças significativas (P > 0,05), com valores para comprimento, perímetro torácico, e altura de garupa de 132,01; 163,75; 126,75 cm, respectivamente. A B S T R A C TThe objective of this study was to determine the optimum plot size (Xo) and number of replicates to evaluate millet shoot fresh matter in times of sowing and cuts. Uniformity trials of 6 × 4 m (24 m 2 ) were carried out in three sowing times, in the agricultural year of 2013-2014. Each uniformity trial was divided into 24 basic experimental units (BEU) of 1 × 1 m (1 m 2 ) and the shoot fresh matter of plants in each BEU was weighed. The Xo was determined by the method of maximum curvature of the coefficient of variation model. The number of replicates for experiments in completely randomized and randomized block design, in scenarios of combinations of i treatments (i = 3, 4, ..., 50) and d minimal differences between treatment means, to be detected as significant at 0.05 probability level by Tukey test, expressed in percentage of the experiment mean (d = 10, 12, ..., 30%), was determined by iterative process until convergence. The optimum plot size to evaluate millet shoot fresh matter is 4.97 m 2 , for the three times of sowing and cuts. For the evaluation of up to 50 treatments, in completely randomized and randomized block design, five replicates are sufficient to identify as significant, at 0.05 probability level by Tukey test, differences between treatment means of 28.66% of the mean of the experiment.Tamanho de parcela e número de repetições em milheto em épocas de semeadura e cortes (1 m 2 ) e pesada a massa verde da parte aérea das plantas de cada UEB. O Xo foi determinado por meio do método da curvatura máxima do modelo do coeficiente de variação. O número de repetições para experimentos nos delineamentos inteiramente casualizados e blocos ao acaso, em cenários formados pelas combinações de i tratamentos (i = 3, 4, ..., 50) e diferenças mínimas entre médias de tratamentos a serem detectadas como significativas a 0,05 de probabilidade, pelo teste de Tukey, expressas em percentagem da média do experimento (d = 10, 12, ..., 30%) foi realizado por processo iterativo até a convergência. O tamanho ótimo de parcela para avaliar a massa verde da parte aérea de milheto é de 4,97 m 2 , para as três épocas de semeadura e cortes. Para avaliar até 50 tratamentos nos delineamentos inteiramente casualizados e blocos ao acaso, cinco repetições são suficientes para identificar, como significativas, pelo teste de Tukey, a 0,05 de probabilidade, diferenças entre médias de tratamentos de 28,66% da média do experimento. ResumoCom o objetivo de avaliar a produção do milheto (Pennisetum glaucum (L.)) em diferentes densidades de semeadura e manejado em duas alturas de corte, foi realizado um experimento na Fazenda Experimental da Universidade Federal de Goiás, no período de março a julho (safrinha) após a colheita da soja. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso em arranjo fatorial (3x2) com três densidades de semeadura (10, 15 e 20 kg.ha -¹) e duas alturas de corte (50 e 70 cm). Os dados foram analisados no programa SAS versão 9.2, considerando-se o efeito de densidade na parcela e altura na subparcela. As médias foram comparadas pelo teste Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. A densidade de semeadura não influenciou (P<0,05) nas produções de massa verde e matéria seca (MS). O corte a 70 cm teve maior produção de MS por corte. Quando avaliada a produção total do período, não houve (P>0,05) influência da densidade de semeadura ou da altura de corte. Por não ter afetado a produção de MS e por permitir maior período de utilização da pastagem com menor gasto com sementes no plantio, recomenda-se a densidade de semeadura de 10 kg.ha -¹ com corte do milheto aos 50 cm de altura.
