Timber management directly influences the population dynamics of tree species, like Copaifera spp. (copaíba), which provide oil-resin with ecological and economic importance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the structure and population dynamics of Copaifera in unmanaged and managed stands by reduced-impact logging (RIL) in eastern Amazon in Pará state, Brazil. Based on a stem map of the study area, 40 Copaifera trees were randomly selected, where an equal number of trees were selected in managed and unmanaged stands. A transect of 10 × 100 m was centered at each tree (50 m each side) to assess Copaifera regeneration. Transects were subdivided into ten plots, of which six were systematically chosen to assess the height, diameter and number of Copaifera seedlings and saplings. The field assessment occurred in 2011 and 2013. To estimate the amount of sunlight transmitted to the forest floor, we computed canopy cover from airborne LiDAR data. According to the results, the abundance of Copaifera seedlings/saplings was higher in managed than unmanaged stands. About 5% of Copaifera regeneration was found between 45-50 m from the Copaifera tree while~73% of regeneration was concentrated within a 10 m radius of the Copaifera tree. We verified that the diameter distribution of Copaifera regeneration was not a negative exponential distribution, as is typical of most tree species in natural forest. Rather, the Copaifera regeneration had a spatially aggregated distribution. In this short-term analysis, the impact of timber management is not negatively affecting the population structure or dynamics of Copaifera regeneration.

RESUMOO gênero Copaifera L. é um dos mais importantes economicamente na Região Amazônica devido, principalmente, à produção dos óleos de copaíba, oléo-resinas com diversas propriedades farmacológicas confirmadas. Apesar disso, os estudos fitoquímicos com as sementes das árvores do gênero Copaifera L. são raros. Copaifera officinalis foi a primeira espécie do gênero Copaifera a ser descrita. Este trabalho descreve a composição dos extratos obtidos em hexano e em acetato de etila das sementes de C. officinalis. No extrato obtido em hexano, a análise por cromatografia em fase gasosa utilizando padrões e através de espectrometria de massas permitiu a identificação de: esqualeno, tetradecano, hexadecano, campesterol, estigmasterol e b-sitosterol; os ácidos graxos hexadecanóico, 9-octadecenóico e octadecanóico (majoritários); e decanóico, eicosanóico, docosanóico e tetracosanóico (minoritários). Cumarina foi isolada do extrato em acetato de etila e identificada por técnicas de RMN. PALAVRAS-CHAVECopaifera officinalis L.; cumarina; ácidos graxos. RESUMO -O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as melhores condições e períodos de armazenamento adequados a tipos de conservação do vigor das sementes de ipê-amarelo. O experimento foi instalado no Laboratório de Análise de Sementes do CCA/UFPB, seguindo-se um delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de sementes de ipê-amarelo acondicionadas em dois tipos de embalagens (papel e polietileno); três condições de armazenamento (câmara, laboratório e geladeira); e seis períodos de armazenamento (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 e 150 dias). As características avaliadas foram: teor de água, Índice de Velocidade de Germinação (IVG) e comprimento e massa seca de plântulas. Os resultados de IVG, comprimento e massa seca de plântulas foram submetidos à análise de regressão polinomial. As sementes de ipê-amarelo acondicionadas na embalagem de papel apresentaram maior teor de água ao longo do armazenamento, nos ambientes de câmara e condições normais de laboratório. Em geral, as sementes acondicionadas nas embalagens de papel e polietileno e armazenadas no ambiente de laboratório perderam mais rapidamente o vigor ao longo do armazenamento.Palavras-chave: Semente florestal, embalagem e ambientes. VIGOR OF STORED SEEDS OF YELLOW-IPE Tabebuia serratifolia (VAHL.) NICH ABSTRACT -This work aimed to determine the best conditions and storage periods adapted to the types of conservation of seed vigor for yellow-ipe. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Analysisof Seeds -CCA/UFPB, using an entirely randomized design. The treatments consisted of yellow-ipe seeds packaged in (paper and polyethylene bags, three storage conditions (chamber, room temperature and humidity conditions and refrigerator) and six storage periods (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days). The evaluated characteristics were: moisture content, Germination Speed Index (GSI), seedling length, and seedling dry matter. The results of GSI, seedling length and seedling dry matter were subjected to the analysis of polynomial regression. The yellow-ipe seeds packaged in paper bags presented higher moisture content along the storage in the chamber and room temperature and humidity conditions. In general, the seeds kept in paper packaging and polyethylene bags and stored in room temperature and humidity conditions lost the vigor more quickly along the storage.
