VIGOR OF STORED SEEDS OF YELLOW-IPE Tabebuia serratifolia (VAHL.) NICH ABSTRACT -This work aimed to determine the best conditions and storage periods adapted to the types of conservation of seed vigor for yellow-ipe. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Analysisof Seeds -CCA/UFPB, using an entirely randomized design. The treatments consisted of yellow-ipe seeds packaged in (paper and polyethylene bags, three storage conditions (chamber, room temperature and humidity conditions and refrigerator) and six storage periods (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days). The evaluated characteristics were: moisture content, Germination Speed Index (GSI), seedling length, and seedling dry matter. The results of GSI, seedling length and seedling dry matter were subjected to the analysis of polynomial regression. The yellow-ipe seeds packaged in paper bags presented higher moisture content along the storage in the chamber and room temperature and humidity conditions. In general, the seeds kept in paper packaging and polyethylene bags and stored in room temperature and humidity conditions lost the vigor more quickly along the storage.

In sampling accomplished in the drought station of 2002 in three pure forest populations constituted by: sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia), sombreiro (Clitoria fairchildiana) and pinus (Pinus sp.) and, an area in initial process of ecological succession, 25 samples of soils were collected by area in two depths: 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm. The studied universe is located at the Balneary "O Quebra", Areia Municipal district, PB. The biggest seeds density always happened in the 0-5 cm depth, independent of the studied environment. The population of sombreiro showed the biggest stock of seeds, being verified 1,012 and 405 seeds germinated/m 2 in the depths 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm, respectively. The seeds bank floristic composition was dominated by species of the Urticaceae family with more than 40% in the two studied depths. The more abundant life form was herbs, independent of the depth, followed by bushes and trees, in all the environments, except in the sombreiro population, where predominated bushes, followed by herbs and trees. Except the sombreiro population, all the studied environments present different densities of the seeds bank of the soil, in spite of being similar in floristic composition.
Summary: Biomedical Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (B-UHMWPE) is widely used in orthopaedics as a biomaterial because of its mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However the adding of vitamin antioxidants can influence the inflammatory process. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of adding ascorbic acid (vitamin C) at different concentrations to the B-UHMWPE matrix, using for this purpose the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The vitamin C was mixed with B-UHMWPE in concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%wt and the molding was performed with a 10MPa load at 160 C for 6min.The fracture surface of cross-sectional area of B-UHMWPE modified with vitamin C showed that the vitamin is present in the polymer matrix in the form of small agglomerates, being an indication that there was no fusion of the vitamin C during the processing step. Using the technique of differential scanning calorimetry it was observed that the melting temperature remained constant as well as the crystallisation temperature, but there was a small variation in crystallinity with the addition of vitamin C. From this study, we conclude that the presence of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) did not alter the thermal properties of crystallisation and melting of B-UHMWPE.

Natural zeolites are low in cost and exhibit interesting properties for applications in adsorption and catalysis. However, the fact that they are natural materials, not obtained in pure form, and can incorporate various compensating ions can compromise their properties and restrict their use. As their textural and chemical properties are of great relevance for adsorption and catalysis applications, this work aims to study the modification of the natural zeolite clinoptilolite to obtain materials with better physicochemical properties. Clinoptilolite was treated with NaOH under various conditions. The treated material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, N2 adsorption and desorption at 77 K, CO2 adsorption at 273 K, and pyridine adsorption. The treatment allowed the removal of silicon from the material, improving the textural properties and preserving the structural Al. With the removal of Si, the Si/Al ratio decreased, and consequently, the number of acid and adsorptive sites increased. In addition, statistical planning revealed that the concentration of NaOH is the parameter that most influences the improvement of the textural properties.
