I - Alimentação de Geophagus

Show more

“…Most of the studies on feeding habits of Neotropical fishes are based on the observation of stomach contents, which cannot discriminate between generalist and opportunistic strategies (Braga, 1999). Several examples are found among the fishes of the Amazon, which have been attributed to be omnivorous with herbivorous tendency as proposed for Geophagus altifrons Heckel (Honda, 1972), or as omnivorous with a tendency to feed on fishes at the surface, e.g. the peculiar Osteoglossum bicirrhosum (Cuvier), that is able to leap several metres above surface water to feed on arthropods, reptiles, birds and bats (Ferreira et al , 1998).…”

“…The diets of riverine fishes living in Neotropical rainforest lowlands have been well studied (Annibal 1982;Carvalho 1980Carvalho , 1984Carvalho et al 1978, Ferreira 1984, Goulding 1980, Goulding & Carvalho 1982Honda 1972, Knöppel 1970Lowe-McConnell 1987, Marlier 1968, Menezes 1961, Santos 1981, Zaret & Rand 1971. The diets were characterized by the importance of the gallery forest as a source of food for numerous fish species in the Amazonian environment (Almeida 1980, Knöppel 1970, Santos 1982, Saul 1975, Soares 1979.…”
