Influence of diabetes mellitus on the mineralization ability of two endodontic materials

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of diabetes mellitus on tissue response and mineralization ability of Sealapex ® and MTA Fillapex ® sealers. Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into two groups: diabetic and non-diabetic. The materials were placed in polyethylene tubes and implanted into dorsal connective tissue of rats for 7 and 30 days. Six animals from each group received injection of calcein, alizarin, and oxytetracycline on days 7, 14, and 21, respectively. The animals were killed afte… Show more

“…3,8 The MTA Fillapex (Angelus Indústria de Produtos Odotontológicos S/A, Londrina, Brazil) is an endodontic sealer that contains MTA, radiopacifiers, and resins in its composition. 9 Previous studies exhibited that the sealer exhibited flowability, dimensional change, radiopacity, and solubility, and this is in agreement with International Organization for Standardization 6876 (ISO 6876/2001). 10,11 Additionally, it exhibited an adequate setting time that is suitable for an endodontic sealer.…”

“…4,22 In our histological analysis, a reduction in the inflammation caused by MTA Fillapex was observed over time despite increase in inflammation observed in relation to the Control group, thereby suggesting that it is more biocompatible with increases in the analysis times as reported in extant studies. 9 The same occurred with AH Plus given that the histological results indicate that the inflammation generated by the sealer decreases over time and can be better evaluated over longer periods of analysis. Other previous studies (both in vitro or in vivo) indicated that AH Plus is considered as biocompatible by allowing reduction of inflammation and cytotoxicity over time.…”

“…Thus, to better understanding the influence of hyperglycemia on tissue response, mineralization ability and cytokine production of both MTAs, a subcutaneous implantation study was performed. Additionally, to induce hyperglycemia in animals we used Alloxan (Gomes Filho et al, ; Gomes‐Filho et al, ). Alloxan and Streptozotocin are the most utilized chemicals drugs to induce hyperglycemia in experimental animals and while some researches reporting that Alloxan is hydrophilic compound similar to glucose, chemically unstable with short half‐life (Lenzen, ; Lenzen & Munday, ) and due the greater stability Streptozotocin is the agent of choice to this induction, these both drugs are widely used and recommended and also exhibit cytotoxic action in β cells of the pancreas (Lenzen, ; Szkudelski, ).…”

“…In addition, no evidence of the direct correlation among diabetes mellitus and inflammatory response or mineralization ability for Sealapex and MTA Fillapex sealers was detected in a similar investigation. 94 Furthermore, the local and systemic effects of both Gray and White MTA on bone marker expression after subcutaneous implantation in diabetic rats were investigated by Queiroz et al 80 Immunohistochemical analysis of osteocalcin and osteopontin production and biochemical analyses of calcium, phosphorus, and serum alkaline phosphatase levels at 7 and 30 days were performed. At day 7, calcium and phosphorus levels were higher in the GMTA group than in the WMTA group.…”
