Temperature mapping of trucks transporting fertile eggs and day-old chicks: Efficiency and/or acclimatization?

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe aim of this study was to evaluate the thermal profiles of trucks used for transporting fertile eggs and day-old chicks. This study was carried out in a broiler hatchery in the State of Sao Paulo. The experiment was conducted during three months, in which six egg loads and 11 chick loads were observed. Thermal profile assessments were performed in an environmental controlled trucks with thermal control and following dimensions: 7.5 x 2.6 x 2.5 m for eggs, and 8.0 x 2.5 x 2.5 m for chicks. The… Show more

“…All procedures involving the manipulation of hatching eggs have their relevance in the hatch and quality of broiler chicks and the logistics of live load in Brazil, specifically in the aviculture sector, faces various problems (Nazareno et al, 2015). In this study, attention is drawn to the multifactorial problem of road transport, focused on mechanical vibrations.…”

“…This can be explained by the fact that chicks have a large body surface area to volume ratio, making them less effective in conserving body heat. Indeed, the thermoregulatory system of chicks is not fully developed in the first week of life, indicating the need for higher environmental temperatures for young birds to maintain normal core temperature (Cordeiro et al, 2010;Nazareno et al, 2015). Therefore, air temperatures below the thermal requirements will inevitably cause financial losses because a higher portion of the feed energy is diverted to thermoregulation or the survival of the animal as opposed to production (Schiassi et al, 2015).…”

“…Some of the biggest issues of shipping alive chicks in air-conditioned trucks are related to thermal heterogeneity inside containers and inadequate air circulation (QUINN & BAKER, 1997;NAZARENO et al, 2015aNAZARENO et al, , 2015b, resulting in possible economic losses.…”

“…In this sense, MARQUES (1994) recommended container temperatures between 22 and 31 °C and relative humidity of 50%. However, NAZARENO et al (2015aNAZARENO et al ( , 2015b suggested an air temperature range and relative humidity inside chick boxes of 32-35 °C and 50-60%, respectively.…”
