The bedding material used in barns for dairy cows has a significant effect on animal welfare and performance. Bedding influences the duration in which animals remain lying down and, consequently, the processes of rumination and milk production. It is crucial to have a complete understanding of the properties of bedding materials and the effects of alternative bedding materials on dairy cattle. This paper aims to evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological properties of various alternative and conventional bedding materials for dairy cattle for use in compost bedded pack or freestall barn systems. We analyzed 50 samples of 17 bedding materials produced in 3 European countries. We analyzed physical properties including the water holding capacity, porosity, moisture content, bulk density, dry bulk density, and particle size. Chemical analyses were performed to determine the total N, total organic C, and C:N ratio. In the biological analyses, the Escherichia coli count, total bacteria count, coliform count, and Klebsiella spp. count were assessed. The results demonstrated how the physical properties of the bedding materials may influence the chemical and biological properties. All of the materials presented adequate chemical properties to be used as bedding material. The physical properties of the bedding materials differed widely among the materials except for the dry bulk density, which presented no difference. Moreover, the contamination of each studied microorganism was observed for each bedding material to determine which material had the lowest level of contamination. Posidonia oceanica, Miscanthus grass, and spelt husks could be considered as a potential alternative material for use as bedding material for dairy cows in both systems (i.e., composted bedded pack and freestall). This ex-periment illustrated the importance of performing thorough physical, chemical, and biological analyses before implementing a material as bedding for dairy cattle.
SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL VARIABILITY OF PHOSPHORUS, POTASSIUM AND OF THE YIELD OF A COFFEE FIELD ABSTRACT:The Precision Agriculture appears as an important tool to the management of coffee farms where the knowledge of some soil features associated with the coffee production could help specific application of fertilizing with positive environmental and economic results. So the aim of this study was to use precision agriculture and geoestatistics to evaluate the variables phosphorus, potassium and the coffee plant yield, in three different crops, by evaluating the semivariogram and kriging maps and show that these tools are important to the coffee management. This study was conducted on the Brejão farm in Três Pontas, Minas Gerais, in 2007 e 2009 crop. As data base were used chemical soil data obtained by sampling in a georreferenced location using a quadricycle with a sampler and a GPS, and the yield data was obtained from manual harvest on the georreferenced location. It was possible to characterize the spatial variability magnitude of the studied attributes, and they presented huge variation on time and space. Adjusts of the best semivariograms enable to produce more accurate maps that contribute to the geostatistics uses on coffee crop.
BROILER BEHAVIOR UNDER DIFFERENT THERMAL ENVIRONMENTSABSTRACT: Thermal environment maintenance is a challenge in poultry industry, since birds change their behavior in response to environmental alterations. Therefore, understanding these changes may help breeders in this issue. In this context, we aimed at evaluating broiler behavior within the first two weeks of life under several chamber air temperature variations. The animals were videotaped to aid monitoring birds in group behavior, frequency of use of drinker, feeder and intermediate areas. The results showed that under low-temperature stress, birds tended to group together within flocks most of the time; thus, affecting the development and poultry breeding efficiency.KEYWORDS: animal environment, bioclimatology, thermal comfort, poultry.
-The objective of this work was to develop, validate, and compare 190 artificial intelligence-based models for predicting the body mass of chicks from 2 to 21 days of age subjected to different duration and intensities of thermal challenge. The experiment was conducted inside four climate-controlled wind tunnels using 210 chicks. A database containing 840 datasets (from 2 to 21-day-old chicks) -with the variables dry-bulb air temperature, duration of thermal stress (days), chick age (days), and the daily body mass of chicks -was used for network training, validation, and tests of models based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) and neuro-fuzzy networks (NFNs). The ANNs were most accurate in predicting the body mass of chicks from 2 to 21 days of age after they were subjected to the input variables, and they showed an R² of 0.9993 and a standard error of 4.62 g. The ANNs enable the simulation of different scenarios, which can assist in managerial decision-making, and they can be embedded in the heating control systems.Index terms: animal welfare, artificial neural network, broiler, modeling, neuro-fuzzy network, thermal comfort. A B S T R A C TThe thermal environment inside a broiler house has a great influence on animal welfare and productivity during the production phase. Enthalpy is a thermodynamic property that has been proposed to evaluate the internal broiler house environment, for being an indicator of the amount of energy contained in a mixture of water vapor and dry air. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the spatial variability of enthalpy in a broiler house during the heating phase using geostatistics. The experiment was conducted in the spring season, in a commercial broiler house with heating system consisting of two furnaces that heat the air indirectly, in the first 14 days of the birds' life. It was possible to characterize enthalpy variability using geostatistical techniques, which allowed observing the spatial dependence through kriging maps. The analyses of the maps allowed observing problems in the heating system in regions inside the broiler house, which may cause a thermal discomfort to the animals besides productive and economic losses.
