The effect of hippophae rhamnoides extract on oral mucositis induced in rats with methotrexate

Abstract: To investigate the effect of HRE (Hippophae rhamnoides extract) on oral mucositis induced in rats with MTX. Material and Methods: Experimental animals were divided into groups as healthy (HG), HRE+MTX (HMTX), and control group, which received MTX (MTXC). HMTX group received 50 mg/kg HRE while MTXC and HG groups received equivolume distilled water with gavage once a day. After one hour of HRE and distilled water administration, HMTX and MTXC groups received a single dose of oral MTX 5 mg/ TNFanimals receiving M… Show more

“…32,33 The findings of the present study were in line with other studies that reported similar changes in tongue mucosa of experimental rats induced by other cytotoxic drugs such as 5-Fluorouracil 34 and methotrexate. 35 In addition, a more recent study showed that irinotecan administration in rats led to an intestinal mucosal damage that was manifested by disorganized epithelial architecture, epithelial damage, atrophy of the villi and inflammatory cellular infiltration. They suggested that the oxidative stress was the main mechanism of irinotecan-induced mucosal toxicity.…”

“…WHO and worldwide regulatory agencies, including FDA, the Canada Vigilance Program, and ANVISA, are working towards setting up current standards and regulations for herbal medicinal products [59][60][61][62][63]. To have new efficacious NHP approved, preclinical studies using plant-derived extracts in animal models, including tests for OM induced by radio-chemotherapy are being performed [64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74].…”

“…), honey, Traumeel S, water grass decoction, and Weleda Ratanhia, also showed similar effects on the alleviation of OM via anti-inflammation activities [17,[63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72]. The bioactive properties of the yarrow plant (Achillea mileofolium), honey, Callendula officinalis flowers, Hipophae rhamnoides L. plant, Chamomile, and Aloe vera were associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and wound healing effects of oral mucositis therapy (Table 4) [64][65][66][72][73][74][75][76][77]. Similar to the advantages of the medical-biological activities of these herbal agents, C. osmophloeum would provide an identical mechanism for relieving oral mucositis.…”
