Prevalence and etiology of buffalo mastitis and milk somatic cell count in dry and rainy seasons in a buffalo herd from Analândia, São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate somatic cell count (SCC), prevalence and etiology of mastitis in a dairy buffalo herd from Analândia, São Paulo State, Brazil, in the dry and rainy seasons. Additionally, antimicrobial susceptibility profile of microorganisms isolated from milk samples was also evaluated. 1,042 milk samples from female Murrah buffaloes in a dairy farm located in Analândia, São Paulo State, Brazil, collected between May 2011 and November 2012 were analyzed. After the mammary gland physical … Show more

“…Since the samples analyzed in the present study found a median value of 114.78x10 3 cells/mL, Brazilian buffalo dairy producers are adhering to the present legislation, although values outside the reference range have been found (Table 2). Pizauro et al (26) studied the prevalence and etiology of buffalo mastitis and milk somatic cell count during the dry and rainy seasons in a buffalo herd in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. They observed that, regarding the SCC count, milk samples with acceptable results in microbiological tests showed average values of 99.51x10 3 cells/mL and 125.6x10 3 cells/mL during cold and warm periods, respectively.…”

“…In that study, the Staphylococcus genus was considered the main etiological agent, being of great epidemiological importance in buffalo mastitis. Indeed, the genus Staphylococcus has been predominantly isolated in samples from buffalo Murrah crossbred with subclinical mastitis (Dhakal et al 2008) and clinical mastitis (Pizauro et al 2014). Khan and Muhammad (2005) prevalence of S. epidermidis (30.1%) and S. aureus (4.8%) in buffaloes with mastitis in São Paulo, Brazil.…”
