Genetic parameters estimates and visual selection for leaves production in Ilex paraguariensis

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The selection of yerba mate superior genotypes, based on each plant leaf weight, is based on genetic parameters obtained from experimental plantations and it is practically impossible from the fourth year of age. Therefore, we estimate genetic parameters and check the feasibility of selection through notes and weight estimates of each tree at 18.5 years of age. The The additive genetic correlations between the real weight of leaves × notes and real weight of leaves × visually estimated weight were of … Show more

“…Differences in aggressiveness between isolates may limit the establishment of effective methods for disease management, and the high level of aggressiveness of some isolates, as well as the low variability for resistance on I. paraguariensis genotypes, indicate that this information should be considered in the strategies for breeding programmes. However, the use of improved resistant clones is a viable alternative to this problem and several studies have already indicated the potential of using this technology to establish plantations of the species (Duarte et al, 2019; Santin et al, 2015; Sturion et al, 2017). The use of clones allows the selection of materials with genetic characteristics of interest (Nascimento et al, 2018), uniformity of plantations, in addition to the possibility to standardize silvicultural treatments and management, ensuring quality raw material for several purposes.…”

“…The success in breeding programs depends on choosing the best genotypes to be the parents of future generations. Selection should be based on the additive genetic values of individuals that will be used in future generations (Sturion et al, 2017). Thus, the 10 most resistant genotypes were selected for the four traits with higher heritability based on clone mean and selective accuracy.…”
