Molecular detection of hepatitis E virus in feces and slurry from swine farms, Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil

Abstract: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is highly disseminated among swine herds worldwide. HEV is also a threat to public health, since particularly genotypes 3 and 4 may cause acute hepatitis in human beings. No previous studies were done on the occurrence of HEV in environmental samples in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. “…De modo geral, a prevalência para o HEV varia de 1 a 10% entre populações urbanas e rurais na América Latina e, desta forma, os autores apontam uma baixa endemicidade para o vírus nestes países (ECHEVARRÍA et al, 2013). Na América do Sul, as evidências iniciais de circulação autóctone do HEV foram determinadas a partir da detecção de anticorpos anti-HEV entre populações rurais e ameríndias na Venezuela (PUJOL et al, 1994).Posteriormente, foram identificados isolados do HEV genótipo 3 em amostras de pacientes com hepatite aguda e suínos na Argentina (SCHLAUDER et al, 2000;MUNNÉ et al, 2006 Em contrapartida, isolados suínos e ambientais do genótipo 3 do vírus têm sido descritos em diversas regiões geográficas do Brasil (PAIVA et al, 2007, DOS SANTOS et al, 2009DE SOUZA et al, 2012;GARDINALI et al, 2012;LANA et al, 2014;VASCONCELOS et al, 2015;HELDT et al, 2016).
