Antioxidant activity and phenolic content of leaf infusions of Myrtaceae species from Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna)

Abstract: There is considerable interest in identifying new antioxidants from plant materials. Several studies have emphasized the antioxidant activity of species belonging to the Myrtaceae family. However, there are few reports on these species from the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna). In this study, the antioxidant activity and phenolic content of 12 native Myrtaceae species from the Cerrado were evaluated (Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Eugenia bimarginata, Eugenia dysenterica, Eugenia klotzschiana, Hexachlamys edulis, Myrc… Show more

“…The treatment of ulcers, wounds, diarrhea, lesions, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, and cholera can be achieved by different parts of guava tree (El Sohafy, Metwalli, Harraz, & Omar, 2009). Ethanolic guava leaf extract has been reported to possess the excellent antioxidant activity including metal chelating, ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities (Tachakittirungrod, Okonogi, & Chowwanapoonpohn, 2007;Takao, Imatomi, & Gualtieri, 2015). Furthermore, it showed antimicrobial activity.…”

“…It mainly originates from high blood glucose levels, where the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the free radicals (FR) production exceeds the defense capacity of the organism and disrupt the cellular reduction-oxidation balance (Dowling and Simmons, 2009;Cansian et al, 2015;Takao et al, 2015).…”
