The study aimed to evaluate the effect of pruning intensity on the phenology and production of blackberry cv. Xavante. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Paraná -Palotina, PR, Brazil, during the 2018/2019 season. The completely randomized design was used as a statical model with four treatments and seven replications. The treatments consisted of different number of stems of 1 m height retained per bush after the pruning: 2, 4, 6, and 8, and each plot consisted of one bush. Data collection included: sprouting and flowering (%), number of fruits per bush, fresh weight, total soluble solids content and titratable acidity of fruits. The number of stems per bush significantly influenced the number of shoots, flowers and fruits per bush, titratable acidity, soluble solids and maturation index. Under the growth conditions, the treatments consisted of 2 and 4 stems per bush resulted in more uniform growth development and higher chemical quality of fruits. However, the highest number of fruits per bush was observed when 8 stems per bush were retained.

Among other factors, climate and management may also affect the development and behavior of blackberry, providing different results on cultivars. Therefore the objective of this work was to evaluate the phenological performance of blackberry cultivars and plants conducted with different numbers of primocane. Two experiments were carried out, the first one consisted of the evaluation of four blackberry cultivars: BRS Tupy, Cherokee, BRS Xavante and Guarani, for the second experiment, with the cultivar BRS Tupy, different numbers of primocane were evaluated: drastic pruning of winter, two, three and four primary primocane also conducted in the traditional system. The phenological aspects evaluated in the two experiments were: beginning, end and duration of flowering and harvest. Considering the results obtained, a great difference can be observed between the productive cycles in relation to the period of flowering and harvest, being more extensive in the first cycle. The phenological aspects of the tested cultivars are affected by the climatic factors observed during the evaluations, thus presenting variations between the two years. During the first cycle, only plants subjected to drastic pruning did not reach the same production period as plants submitted to other treatments. Among the tested cultivars 'BRS Tupy' and 'Cherokee' they maintained the highest harvesting periods, even though they presented a great variation between the cycles. Young plants of the cultivar BRS Tupy present a restricted harvest period.

Phenological behavior and agronomic potential of blackberry and hybrids in a subtropical region

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the phenological behavior and agronomic potential of blackberry varieties and hybrids in a subtropical region. Blackberry seedlings of four varieties and two hybrids were purchased in April 2015 in the form of stem cuttings and transplanting in July 2015. Winter pruning was carried out on August 18, 2016 and 2017. The experimental design was composed of a randomized complete block design, containing four varieties and two hybrids, four blocks and five useful plants per experimental unit. The harvest was performed every two days to the determination of fresh biomass, longitudinal and transverse diameter, volume, number of fruits per plant, yield and estimated productivity. The average duration of the phenological cycles in the two harvests varies between 109 and 162 days and 114 and 148, respectively. Hybrids Boysenberry and Olallie presented a shorter cycle in both harvests. In the 2016/2017 crop, the harvest lasted from 39 to 88 days. In the 2017/2018 harvest, it lasted 23 to 57 days, starting in mid-November through early January. The Tupy and Chickasaw cultivars were the most productive in the first crop. In the second crop, the Tupy and Navaho cultivars were prominent.
