“…In conclusion, we understand that the ESP, with its complex network of articulation, both in terms of political power, civil society organizations and the dissemination of values through social medias, demands an opposition at the height of the challenge it imposes on education and the threat it represents to Brazil's democracy (Penna 2016;Guilherme and Picoli, 2018;Macedo, 2018). Presently, the correlations of forces in the Brazilian political conjuncture does not allow one to presume a balanced debate and political dispute, considering the new phase of neoliberal attacks on welfare and its alliance with the far-right, both in Brazil and elsewhere.…”

“…Their proposals would abolish any academic freedom for teachers inside classrooms (Ramos, 2016; Penna, 2018b). Furthermore, the ESP civil branch (branded ‘ESP movement’) has been using its strong online presence to promote witch‐hunts against ‘left‐wing’ educators; also protesting at school gates to physically intimidate teachers who, according to the ESP, deliver political ideology to their students (Macedo, 2018).…”

“…Teachers, teachers’ unions, parents, students, politicians and academics across Brazil have been resisting ESP moves and methods (Guilherme & Picoli, 2018; Macedo, 2018). From online platforms such as ‘Teachers against the ESP’ or ‘Parents for Democracy’ to parliamentary battles and street protests, Brazilian educational communities have tried to fight against the ESP ideology of ‘politically neutral’ schooling.…”
