VARIATION OF MICROFIBRIL ANGLE OF Pinus radiata D. Don IN RELATION TO TREE SPACING IN CHILEAN PLANTATIONS

Abstract: -Four stands of 28-year-old radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) grown in the eighth region (Biobio) of Chile were sampled to determine the effect of tree spacing on the microfibril angle. The samples were taken at two different stem levels of the tree, 2.5 m and 7.5 m, with increment strip taken in the Nothern direction. The four experimental stands were characterized by the following spacing 2x2, 2x3, 3x4 and 4x4. The microfibril angle was measured by X-ray diffraction with the SilviScan technology at the FP-… Show more

“…It is likely that external factors, such as regular gales and the slope of the growing area (between 10° to 45°), have contributed to high MFA variation in these young trees. With a regular windy period during the rainy and dry seasons, wind is a key factor in determining MFA orientation in most young trees in Indonesia (Ishigura et al 2012;Alteyrac 2015). In addition, the slope in the study area has forced the young trees to retain their growing orientation over a period of time since they were planted.…”

“…Os coeficientes de determinação encontrados para as propriedades físico-mecânicas foram menos ajustados. Esses resultados podem ser explicados pelo fato de que, no crescimento inicial de Pinus, o lenho tardio é bastante próximo em densidade e as propriedades são mais influenciadas pelo ângulo da microfibrila e pela composição química da madeira (Moya et al, 2013;Alteyrac, 2015;Funda et al, 2020).…”
