Aim To determine the effects of two different methods, breastfeeding and heel warming, during heel stick procedures on pain levels in healthy term neonates. Methods This study was a prospective, randomized controlled trial. The sample of the study consisted of 150 healthy newborns who matched the case selection criteria and were brought to the nursery for the heel stick procedure. Fifty neonates were randomly assigned to each group: breastfeeding (n = 50), heel warming (n = 50), and control (n = 50), using computer‐based randomization. The study data were obtained using an Information Form and the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS). Results The pre‐procedural pain scores of the breastfeeding group (mean 4.44 SD 1.21 seconds) were lower than in the heel warming (mean 6.10 SD 1.07 seconds) and the control group (mean 6.42 SD 0.91 seconds) (P < 0.01). Both the total crying time and the first calming time of the breastfeeding group were shorter than the heel warming and control group. The first calming time of the heel warming group was shorter than in the control group. Conclusions Both breastfeeding and heel warming are effective in reducing the calming time during heel stick procedures. However, breastfeeding is more effective than heel warming in reducing pain during heel stick and should be preferred as the first choice.

Método: O estudo foi do tipo exploratório descritivo com abordagem qualitativa, no qual, através da aplicação de um roteiro de entrevista semi-estruturada, foram levantados dados condizentes com a temática, partindo-se de instrumento com 5 questionamentos. Os dados foram tratados mediante a análise de conteúdo enunciada por Bardin. Resultados: O discurso enfatizado pelas enfermeiras, possibilitou a emersão das categorias: Desenvolvimento Neuropsicomotor, Dor no Neonato, Comportamento Neonatal, Equipe Multiprofissional e Hiperestimulação Ambiental. Os discursos nos fazem crer que os processos avaliativos e interventivos, no que tange ao incremento do DNM, são aplicados na rotina hospitalar, porém, sem o devido embasamento científico que os justifique. Considerações finais: Entendemos que, apesar de diversos conhecimentos terem sido citados no decorrer do estudo, uma política de aperfeiçoamento da prática de cuidado deve ser estabelecida, para que novas técnicas avaliativas e interventivas sejam instituídas no cuidado diário com o RN cardiopata congênito.Descritores: desenvolvimento infantil; conhecimento; profissionais de enfermagem, cardiopatias.Summary Purpose: To analyze nurses' knowledge regarding the evaluation and intervention process for the development of neuropsychomotor development (NMD) in congenital heart disease newborns. Methods: The study was a descriptive exploratory type with a qualitative approach, in which, through the application of a semi-structured interview script, data consistent with the theme were collected, starting with an instrument with 5 questions. The data were treated using the content analysis formulated by Bardin. Results: The discourse emphasized by the nurses enabled the emergence of the categories: Neuropsychomotor Development, Pain in the Neonatal, Neonatal Behavior, Multiprofessional Team and Environmental Hyperstimulation. The discourses make us believe that the evaluation and intervention processes, in relation to the increase of the NMD, are applied in the hospital routine, however, without the proper scientific background that justifies them. Conclusion: We believe that, although several studies have been cited during the course of the study, a policy of improving care practice should be established so that new evaluative and interventional techniques can be established in daily care with congenital heart disease.
