“…This is one of few studies to ascertain correlates of MHNs' attitudes towards families' importance in mental healthcare practice. Generally, MHNs in this study demonstrated positive attitudes concerning family involvement in mental healthcare, which is in line with previous research among primary healthcare nurses in the care of patients with mental health problems (Fernandes et al, 2018; Nóbrega et al, 2020). This finding also corroborates the fact that families act as pivotal institutions representing supporting roles in patient care.…”

“…A systematic review performed by Barreto et al (2022) indicates that supportive attitudes of nurses towards involving families in nursing care are related to nurses' characteristics including older age, greater clinical experiences, higher educational level, and working at primary healthcare and/or outpatient services. Nurses working in primary healthcare services who attain higher educational degrees and receive specialized education/training in family nursing display favourable attitudes towards the importance of families in the care of patients with mental illness (Fernandes et al, 2018; Nóbrega et al, 2020). Specifically, MHNs who have had an experience of illness in their own family (Sveinbjarnardottir et al, 2011) and more years of clinical experience (Hsiao & Tsai, 2015; Sveinbjarnardottir et al, 2011) hold more positive attitudes about families' importance in mental healthcare practice.…”

“…These results reinforce that mental health goes beyond the biological issues, being the result of multiple social, economic, psychological and cultural interactions [75]. Therefore, it is not only related to the absence of manifestations of mental distress, with the need to assess the frequency and intensity of these events and how this affects people's quality of life [76][77][78].…”

“…Cultural factors can partially explain men's adherence to the health protection measures and consequent increase in the incidence of CMDs during the pandemic period. Generally, men are encouraged to adopt patriarchal values where self-care and health practices go against their masculinity and reinforce the stereotypes of independence, virility, courage and strength which, in turn, can prevent them from adopting protective health [78][79][80][81][82].…”
