Entrepreneurial Intention: Categorization, Classification of Constructs and Proposition of a Model

Abstract: Literature review studies on Entrepreneurial Intention (EI) point to a future of high standardization (Liñán & Fayolle, 2015) and potential impoverishment of the current research (Terjesen, Hessels, & Li, 2013). There is an over-standardization in studies on EI, and a focus on potential dogmatism in the area -that is, theoretical and methodological inflexibility with replication based on alteration only in substantive domain of EI. The objective of this study is to broaden the focus of the literature review on… Show more

“…Firstly, we emphasize the Theory of Rational Action of Ajzen and Fishbein (1977), which encouraged the Theory of Entrepreneurial Intentions (Shapero & Sokol, 1982) and the TPB (Ajzen, 1991), the latter being characterized as the most used theoretical model to predict entrepreneurial intention (Esfandiar et al, 2019;Fayolle & Liñán, 2014;Martins et al, 2019). Depending on TPB, human action is guided by beliefs that involve direct observation of a given object/attribute and the use of formal coding systems that comprise rules of logic (Ajzen, 1991;Liñán & Chen, 2009).…”

“…The theoretical model of entrepreneurial intention that is most used in the empirical and conceptual literature of entrepreneurship (Esfandiar, Sharifi-Tehrani, Pratt, & Altinay, 2019;Fayolle & Liñán, 2014;Martins, Santos, & Silveira, 2019) is the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), developed by Ajzen (1991), which explains intent and behavior by means of three determining factors that predict them: 1. personal attitude, that is, the favorable assessment to perform or not to perform the behavior; 2. subjective norms, that is, the perceived social pressure to perform the behavior or not; and 3. perceived behavioral control, that is, the perceived easiness or difficulty in performing the behavior based on reflection of past experiences (Ajzen, 1991;Liñán & Chen, 2009).…”

“…The formalization of the research on EI began with the studies of Shapero (1984) Shapero and Sokol (1982), and Ajzen (1985Ajzen ( , 1991. Subsequently, with the work of Autio, Kenney, Mustar, Siegel, and Wright (2014), Fayolle and Gailly (2014), Saeed, Yousafzai, Yani-De-Soriano, and Muffatto (2015), Khuong and An (2016), Souza and Silveira (2016), Ferreira, Loiola, and Gondim (2017), Paiva, Lima, Rebouças, Ferreira, and Fontenele (2018), Braum and Nassif (2018), and Martins, Santos, and Silveira (2019). Krueger and Carsud (1993) presuppose that the intention to start a new business has as antecedents the desire in this achievement, the viability and the propensity to act on opportunities.…”

“…Dentre as pesquisas realizadas nesse campo, muitas destacam o importante papel que a intenção possui na decisão de começar um novo negócio (Couto, Mariano, & Mayer, 2010;Moriano, Gorgievski, Laguna, & Stephan, 2012;Fayolle & Liñán, 2014;Olmos & Castilho, 2015;Ozaralli & Rivenburgh, 2016;Nguyen, 2017;Joseph, 2017;Jie & Harms, 2017;Silveira, Ferreira et al, 2017;Martins, Santos, & Silveira, 2019).…”
