Is there an association between perinatal complications and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattentive type in children and adolescents?

Abstract: In a case-control study, we expanded to ADHD-I previous findings suggesting the association between perinatal factors and broadly defined ADHD. Due to the preventable nature of some of these PDPC, our results have clear impact in public mental health policies.

“…Curran et al (2015) reported an association between CS and ASD in the cohort as a whole, but not amongst siblings, indicating that this association may have been related to unmeasured confounding. There have only been two previous studies that reported an adjusted estimate of the association between CS and ADHD, neither of which found a significant association (Ketzer et al 2012;Silva et al 2014). However, both studies were case-control [though one was nested and used a population-based dataset (Silva et al 2014)].…”

“…Some studies have linked birth by CS to an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) (Hultman et al 2002), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (Silva et al 2014) and behavioral difficulties (Kelmanson 2013) but results have been inconsistent (Burstyn et al 2010;Ketzer et al 2012). A recent meta-analysis reported that CS was associated with a 23 % increased risk of ASD compared to vaginal delivery (VD) (Curran et al 2014), however, the included studies were limited.…”

“…Perinatal pitocin exposure was associated with a subsequent ADHD diagnosis in a first study by Kurth and Haussmann (2011) (p < .001). A population based case-control study by Ketzer, Gallois, Martinez, Rohde and Schmitz (2012) reported that children and adolescents, whose mothers presented more perinatal complications, including complicated labour, had a significant higher risk for ADHD-Inattentive subtype (ADHD-IA) (OR = 1.25; 1.1-1.5). A retrospective study found that a history of cord prolapse was significantly associated with a higher risk of ADHD in females than in the control group (Silva, Colvin, Hagemann & Bower, 2014).…”
