Myroides odoratimimus soft tissue infection in an immunocompetent child following a pig bite: case report and literature review

Abstract: Members of the genus Myroides are aerobic Gram-negative bacteria that are common in environmental sources, but are not components of the normal human microflora. Myroides organisms behave as low-grade opportunistic pathogens, causing infections in severely immunocompromised patients and rarely, in immunocompetent hosts. A case of Myroides odoratimimus cellulitis following a pig bite in an immunocompetent child is presented, and the medical literature on Myroides spp. soft tissue infections is reviewed.

“…In immunocompetent people, primary infections by Myroides sp. have been rarely reported, such as a case of M. odoratimimus cellulitis resulting from a pig bite in an immunocompetent child (Maraki et al, 2012). However, secondary infections can frequently arise when human immunity is impaired, such as post catheterization (Holmes et al, 1977;Spanik et al, 1998), in patients with cancer (Holmes et al, 1977;Spanik et al, 1998;Song, 2005) or diabetes mellitus (Yang and Wang, 2001), and in neonates (Wang and Su, 1992;Zhang and Zhang, 1996;Zhao, 2000).…”

“…Although Myroides is commonly found is soil and water, the mode of acquisition in this case could not be ascertained. There was no history of animal bite, injuries or exposure to contaminated water bodies, which is often implicated as source of infection (Maraki, Sarchianaki et al, 2012). Myroides infection are rare in Indian setting and presently only few case reports are published till date (Deepa et al, 2014, Elantamilan et al, 2015, Prateek et al, 2015.…”

“…In immunocompromised patients, Myroides may be responsible for skin infections in patients with diabetes [6,7], urinary tract infections, lung infections [8][9][10], endocarditis [11], ventriculitis [12,13], bacteremia [14] or infections of the central nervous system. Rarely, there have been reported cases of infection in immunocompetent hosts [12,13]; the described cases were associated with hepatic, renal insufficiency, malignancies or co-infections with Oerskovia turbata in alithiasic cholecystitis [15].…”
