Antibiotic resistance mechanisms of Myroides sp.

Abstract: Bacteria of the genus Myroides (Myroides spp.) are rare opportunistic pathogens. Myroides sp. infections have been reported mainly in China. Myroides sp. is highly resistant to most available antibiotics, but the resistance mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Current strain identification methods based on biochemical traits are unable to identify strains accurately at the species level. While 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing can accurately achieve this, it fails to give information on the status and m… Show more

“…We reported a case of urosepsis due to M. odoratimimus in a 41 year old male. Resistance to multiple antibiotics in Myroides spp, especially intrinsic resistance to betalactam antibiotics has been reported previously (Mammeri et al, 2002, Hu et al, 2016. The present isolate was resistant to all available antibiotics except minocycline.…”

“…All bacterial hosts of the chromosomal genes in this group, both the representative genes and the members of the families, belonged to the phylum Bacteroidetes. Two of the families in this group consisted of genes located in pathogens, where G29 in family 22 was found on the chromosome of an isolate from the poultry pathogen Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale [37] and G04 in family 4 was present on a plasmid harbored by an isolate of the opportunistic pathogen Myroides odoratimimus [38]. …”

“…The numbers of genes, proteins, and tRNAs in PR63039 genome were larger than that of the other nine genomes. We should mention that eight Myroides genomes were incomplete, and the sequencing of the plasmids in PR63039 strains were not completed even its chromosome was fully sequenced (Figure 1 in Hu et al., , ).…”

“…M. odoratimimus infections are life‐threatening due to its multidrug resistance and unknown pathogenicity (as summarized in Hu et al., ). In our previous report (Hu et al., ), to some extent, we correlated the phenotype in antibiotic susceptibilities and infectivity of M. odoratimimus with the genomic findings of a variety of resistance genes, virulence factor (VF) genes.…”
