Авторы описывают разработанный ими композитный индекс макропсихологического состояния общества, соотнося его с другими, схожими по смыслу показателями. На основе использования этого индекса прослежена динамика психологического состояния российского общества в годы реформ. Полученные данные демонстрируют крайне неудовлетворительное психологическое состояние нашего общества, что имеет целый ряд негативных последствий. Обосновывается вывод о необходимости радикального изменения целей и ориентиров общественного развития, сводившихся в первые годы реформ преимущественно к экономическим показателям.
Предпринимается попытка структурировать национальный менталитет. В качестве основных структурных элементов национального менталитета рассматриваются: язык, коллективная память, социальные представления, коллективные чувства, эмоции и настроения, коллективные нормы, ценности и отношения, ментальные репрезентации культуры, стиль м ышления и социального восприятия, национальный характер и темперамент, поведенческие образцы, национальная идентичность.
В статье приводятся статистические данные, а также результаты психологических и социологических исследований, свидетельствующие о крайне негативном нравственном состоянии современного российского общества. Автор рассматривает причины его нравственной деградации и способы улучшения положения. Среди таковых он обозначает коррекцию сформировавшегося в общественном мнении понимания свободы, «экстернализацию морали» путем придания основополагающим нравственным нормам статуса законов и возрождение институтов морального контроля. По мнению автора, именно дефицит контроля, в том числе и нравственного, а не недостаток свободы, является основной проблемой современного российского общества.
