Management of contaminated areas by gas stations in Cuiabá, MatoGrosso, Brazil ABSTRACTThe commercialization of petroleum-based fuels is a potentially polluting activity. Environmental impacts are mainly due to tanker truck accidents and leaking underground storage tanks of gas stations. The management of contaminated sites aims to reduce risks to human health and environment through measures that provide knowledge regarding the characteristics of contaminated site and the impacts of contaminants, thus allowing the most appropriate intervention to be determined. This paper analyzed the environmental licensing process of the Cuiaba-MT gas stations in order to present an overview of the gas stations responsible for some type of environmental contamination, since the investigation of liabilities is required for this license. One hundred and thirty-six licensing processes were analyzed, and it was found that 17 of these reported some type of contamination in soil and/or groundwater. The main contaminants were Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene an...
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: WATER QUALITY OF SHALLOW WELLS IN AREA WITH LACK SANITATION IN CUIABÁ, MT: MICROBIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL EVALUATION AND HEALTHY RISKS FACTORS ABSTRACTWaterborne illnesses are responsible for millions of deaths every year in the world. These illnesses are related to lack sanitation and unsafe water for human consumption. In Cuiabá, MT, the Pedra 90 Neighborhood has problems related to quality and quantity of water which led people to build shallow wells in their residences to ensure an alternative supply. This study evaluated the water quality of seventeen of these wells and found that they are contaminated by Escherichia coli and heterotrofic bacteria. The proximity of the wells to rudimentary tanks, that are common in the region, can explain this microbiological contamination. The consumption of this unsafe water can be harmful to population health.
ABSTRACTThis research describes the results of physicochemical, chemical and bacterium analyses of two cemeteries in Cuiabá metropolitan aerea: São Gonçalo and Parque Bom Jesus. The aim of this work is to investigate the environmental impacts on the groundwaters due to the location of cemeteries in urban areas. Periodical water samples were analised from wells implanted in the cemeteries areas. The results of the physicochemical, bacterium and chemical analyses allowed to conclude that: 1. Groundwater in that specific cemeteries do not show high concentrations of nitrogen compound (nitrate, nitrite and ammonia) and metals. 2. The presence of the cemiteries contributed to elevate the electric conductivity in the groundwaters which is probably due to the process of corpse decomposition "necrochorume", which increases the concentration of dissolved salts in the groundwaters. 3. The cemeteries contribute to elevate the total ion concentrations (total dissolved solids) in the groundwaters, suggesting the "necrochorume" influence to the increase of mineral concentration. 4. The presence of Salmonella in the groundwaters of the two cemeteries was also detected. The data obtained in this study emphasize the danger to human health represented by the contamination of groundwaters in areas of cemeteries.
A cross-sectional study utilizing spatial analysis techniques was conducted to study water quality problems and risk of waterborne enteric diseases in a lower-middle-class urban district of Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Field surveys indicate high rates of supply water contamination in domiciles and, conspicuously, in public and private schools. Logistic regression models developed for the variables turbidity, Escherichia coli, total coliforms, and intestinal parasite infection did not identify singular explanatory factors for the supply water conditions and elevated incidences of enteric diseases among children. The contamination problems were found to be the result of precarious conditions involving both public infrastructure and in-building sanitary installations and their maintenance. GIS methods were successfully applied to create spatial datasets for logistic regression model building and to construct risk maps using regression coefficients.
The present study examines the individual and cumulative environmental effects of the six cascading hydroelectric dams currently in operation on in the Jauru River, a direct tributary of the Paraguay River, the main river in the Pantanal, as well as presenting a general characterization of water quality in the Jauru River. Water quality was evaluated at eight sites along the longitudinal gradient of the Jauru River. A total of 339 water quality samples from between 1990 and 2013 were considered, including 72 samples collected prior to the installation of Hydropower plants, treated as natural, and 267 samples, treated as altered . Statistica 7 software was used for statistical treatment and for the Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric test; squared Pearson correlation (coefficient of determination, R 2) was also applied to evaluated the relationship between the morphological and hydraulic parameters of each reservoir and cumulatively, with the rate of change of water quality parameters in three stretches of the Jauru River. The water quality of the Jauru River in general was characterized by low concentrations of electrolytes and slightly acidic pH, oligotrophy, reduced values of color, turbidity and solids and good oxygenation. While these general conditions were maintained over the two phases studied, we verified the occurrence of change in the pattern of variation of the physical and chemical conditions evaluated, mainly between the second and the fifth hydroelectric reservoir. This change, which implies discontinuity in the longitudinal gradient, was indicated by nine out of the twelve parameters measured in this stretch of the Jauru River, downstream of each individual reservoir and/or cumulatively. The constructive characteristics of the hydropower plants, especially water inlet height, water retention time and flooded area, as well as the proximity between two or more impoundments, are factors that influenced the observed changes, which are important aspects in the processes of environmental licensing for these future plants, or even, in some cases, to avoid them from being built at all as planned. This research also indicated the need for studies that consider the basin in an integrated way, and for the collection of more consistent data before these impoundments are implemented.
