A tanulmány célja, hogy megpróbálja feltárni és összegezni egy térség, jelen esetben a Közép-dunántúli régió valamennyi olyan szervezetét, intézményét és szereplőjét, melyek a kínálati oldal aktoraként közép- és hosszú távon akár aktívan, akár passzívan hatást gyakorolhatnak a régió innovációs folyamataira. A kínálati oldalon megtalálható szereplők tevékenységének egy egységes, a hálózati együttműködést és az erőteljes specializáción alapuló munkamegosztást előtérbe helyező koncepció részeként történő tudatos fejlesztése eredményeként lehet létrehozni azt a regionális innovációs rendszert, amely hosszú távon képes hozzájárulni a régió jövőképének ( Közép-Dunántúl váljék az innováció régiójává") megvalósításához. A tanulmány a régió gazdasági szerkezetváltásának és kutatás-fejlesztési tevékenységének legfontosabb sajátosságait követően sorra veszi a leendő regionális innovációs rendszer lehetséges elemeit, így a felsőoktatási és kutatóintézeteket, az ipari parkokat és valamennyi olyan szervezetet (inkubátorházak, vállalkozásfejlesztési szervezetek, klaszter kezdeményezések, kamarák stb.), amely szolgáltatásaival hozzájárulhat a vállalkozások innovációs képességeinek javulásához.
Egy nagyváros sikeressége nem csak az objektív helyi gazdasági, társadalmi, kulturális adottságok és mechanizmusok jellegétől, felhasználásától függ, hanem azoktól a szubjektívebb, akár kollektív jellegű véleményektől, képzetektől is, amelyek egyszerre lenyomatai, tükröződései, de egyben meghatározói, motiváló elemei is az egyéni és közösségi társadalmi cselekvéseknek. Ezeket a véleményeket, képzeteket próbáljuk feltárni (kérdőíves felméréssel) egy nagyvárosi térségben (Győr) és egy sajátos helyzetű társadalmi csoport (helyi elit) esetében annak érdekében, hogy jobban megismerjükőket, mint a helyi társadalom meghatározó rétegét, illetve, hogy a város is jobban megismerje önmagát (gazdasági és társadalmi fejlődését és a jelenlegi adottságait) az általuk kifejtett vélemények tükrében.
A napjainkban zajló fejlődési folyamatok fő motorja az információs technológia, amely az elkövetkező évtizedekben a legnagyobb ipari szektorrá válhat. Ez a folyamat azonban óriási társadalmi kihatással jár együtt Magyarországon is, ahol napjainkban éljük át az információs társadalomba vezető átmenetet. A magyar városhálózat gerincét alkotó megyei jogú városok között éles verseny folyik új befektetők megnyeréséért, új igazgatási és adminisztratív funkciók megszerzéséért. Az információs társadalom új versenyhelyzet elé állítja Magyarországot, így a városhálózatot is. Ezért is fontos az egyes nagyvárosok helyzetét a többi megyei jogú városhoz viszonyítva megvizsgálni, hogy pontosabb képet nyerhessünk az egyes városok információs társadalomban betöltött szerepéről.
A társadalmi tőke szakirodalma alapján nem kétséges, hogy alapvető szerepet játszik egy határtérség interakcióinak alakításában és társadalmi integrációjában. A tanulmány a magyar és a szlovák oldali határszakaszon végzett lakossági kérdőíves felmérés kapcsolathálózati változóinak elemzésén keresztül azt mutatja be, hogy mennyire élőek a határon átívelő kapcsolatok, milyen eltérések figyelhetők meg a szlovák és a magyar nemzetiségű lakosok kapcsolathálózataiban, milyen eltérések jellemzőek az erős és a gyenge kötésekre, és milyen a kapcsolati tőke „térbelisége". Várakozásainknak megfelelően a kapcsolatrendszerek aszimmetrikusak a határ két oldalán a szlovákiai magyarság jelenléte miatt, valamint a korábbi kutatásokat megerősítve az iskolai végzettség és a munkajelleg alapján meghatározott státuszparaméterek mentén differenciálódik a lakosság kapcsolati tőkekészletének ez a szegmense, míg területi alapon (nyugat–kelet tengely) nem figyelhető meg szignifikáns eltérés.
