Abstract-Recent advances in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology have boosted the deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Limited by energy storage capability of sensor nodes, it is crucial to jointly consider security and energy efficiency in data collection of WSNs. Disjoint multi-path routing scheme with secret sharing is widely recognized as one of the effective routing strategies to ensure the safety of information. This kind of scheme transforms each packet into several shares to enhance the security of transmission. However, in many-to-one WSNs, shares have a high probability to traverse through the same link and to be intercepted by adversaries. In this paper, we formulate secret sharing based multi-path routing problem as an optimization problem. Our objective aims at maximizing both network security and lifetime, subject to the energy constraints. To this end, a three-phase disjoint routing scheme, called Security and Energy-efficient Disjoint Route (SEDR), is proposed. Based on secret sharing algorithm, the SEDR scheme dispersively and randomly delivers shares all over the network in the first two phases, and then transmits these shares to the sink node. Both theoretical and simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme has significant improvement in network security under both scenarios of single and multiple black holes without reducing the network lifetime.

CRISPR-Cas systems are considered as barriers to horizontal gene transfer (HGT). However, the influence of such systems on HGT within species is unclear. Also, little is known about the impact of CRISPR-Cas systems on bacterial evolution at the population level. Here, using Bacillus cereus sensu lato as model, we investigate the interplay between CRISPR-Cas systems and HGT at the population scale. We found that only a small fraction of the strains have CRISPR-Cas systems (13.9% of 1871), and most of such systems are defective based on their gene content analysis. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that the CRISPR-Cas systems are barriers to HGT within this group, since strains harboring active systems contain less mobile genetic elements (MGEs), have lower fraction of unique genes and also display limited environmental distributions than strains without active CRISPR-Cas systems. The introduction of a functional CRISPR-Cas system into a strain lacking the system resulted in reduced adaptability to various stresses and decreased pathogenicity of the transformant strain, indicating that B. cereus group strains could benefit from inactivating such systems. Our work provides a large-scale case to support that the CRISPR-Cas systems are barriers to HGT within species, and that in the B. cereus group the inactivation of CRISPR-Cas systems correlated with acquisition of MGEs that could result in better adaptation to diverse environments.

Abstract-Green energy is emerging as a promising alternative energy source to power network devices in next-generation wireless networks. Different from traditional energy, green energy is replenished from nature, e.g., solar and wind, and is highly dependent on the capacities and locations of the electronic devices. As such, the fundamental design criterion in the network deployment and management is shifted from energy efficiency to energy sustainability due to the sustainable nature of green energy. In this paper, we study the network resource management issues in next-generation wireless networks with sustainable energy supply. Our objective is to deploy the minimal number of green RNs, i.e., RNs powered by green energy, and optimize resource allocation to ensure full network connectivity and users' Quality of Service (QoS) requirements can be fulfilled with the harvested energy based on the cost threshold. To this end, the RN placement and sub-carrier allocation (RNP-SA) issues are jointly formulated into a mixed integer non-linear programming problem. Two low-complexity heuristic algorithms, namely RNP-SA with top-down/bottom-up algorithms (RNP-SAt/b), are presented to solve the non-linear programming problem in different network scenarios. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithms provide simple yet efficient solutions and offer important guidelines on network deployment and resource management in a green radio network with sustainable energy sources.Index Terms-Wireless communication networks, sustainable energy, relay node placement, sub-carrier allocation.

In the soil environment, Bacilli can affect nematode development, fecundity and survival. However, although many Bacillus species can kill nematodes, the virulence mechanisms Bacilli utilize remain unknown. In this study, we collected 120 strains comprising 30 species across the Bacillaceae and Paenibacillaceae families of the Bacillales order and measured their nematicidal activities in vitro. Comparison of these strains’ nematicidal capacities revealed that nine species, including Bacillus thuringiensis, B. cereus, B. subtilis, B. pumilus, B. firmus, B. toyonensis, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, Brevibacillus laterosporus and B. brevis, were highly nematicidal, the first of which showed the highest activity. Genome sequencing and analysis identified many potential virulence factors, which grouped into five types. At least four possible mechanisms were deduced on the basis of the combination of these factors and the bacterial nematicidal activity, including a pore-forming mechanism of crystal proteins, an inhibition-like mechanism of thuringiensin and a degradation mechanism of proteases and/or chitinases. Our results demonstrate that 120 spore-forming Bacilli across different families share virulence factors that may contribute to their nematicidal capacity.
