Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of intensity of market competition and strategic orientation on the adoption of green initiatives among public listed companies (PLCs) in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey was distributed to all 921 PLCs, and 120 samples were analysed. This study used a statistical tool named partial least squares – structural equation modelling (PLS–SEM) for data analysis. Interviews were also conducted with a few selected companies to obtain in-depth information on green practices. Findings The findings of this paper reveal that strategic orientation significantly influences the adoption of green initiatives in Malaysian PLCs while the intensity of market competition does not. Competition on green products or services is not prevalent yet in Malaysia; hence, PLCs are reluctant to make huge investment in green activities. The extent of green initiatives adoption in Malaysian PLCs is just at a moderate level, suggesting that Malaysian PLCs are not so proactive but in the progressing stage of practicing green. PLCs still need some incentives to adopt more green initiatives. Research limitations/implications The present study only focussed on the green initiatives adoption in Malaysian PLCs; hence, the research findings may not be generalizable to other countries. This study only considered the contingency theory and stakeholder theory. Due to the time and cost constraints, the data were collected at only one single point of time; thus, it may inherit the usual limitations of cross-sectional data. Practical implications The findings of this study also give empirical evidence to the practitioners that their decisions to adopt green initiatives are significantly influenced by certain factors. Companies need to understand the key drivers of their green initiatives in order for them to meet the green challenges and to ultimately derive performance from their implementations. Regulatory authorities and financial institutions could facilitate and encourage for the effective implementation of green initiatives by providing more incentives and facilities. Social implications The findings of this study that provide the forces of green initiatives would arouse more environmental concerns among individuals, organizations, and society. The findings of this study also open an eye to the society that commitment of everyone, including upper and lower level of position, is needed in order to create the culture of green for the benefit of society as a whole. Originality/value This study contributes to the environmental management literature in the context of green and sustainable development, and to nurture green practices among industries and society for the aims to achieve the sustainability agenda. This study is conducted to explain the motivation behind the proactive decisions on sustainability practices. The current literature on green issues and sustainability provides limited evidence on what really drives companies to practice green.

E-commerce has been extensively capitalized by big companies. However, little is known about the adoption of e-commerce by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Many might do so to reap the efficiency of the internet to benefit their businesses. Thus, the study aims to investigate factors affecting adoption of e-commerce by SMEs in Melaka. Five dimensions, namely, Perceived Ease of Use, Security, Relative Advantage, Perceived Compatibility, and Top Management Support were drawn from Technology acceptance model and UTAUT. This research had adopted a quantitative research method that utilized questionnaires to collect data from SMEs in Melaka. About ninety-two percent of 219 questionnaires were collected. Results indicated that these dimensions were significant to influence the adoption of e-commerce among SMEs in Melaka. This finding is useful for SMEs and other organizations to understand what factors are important in making decision about adopting e-commerce. We recommend future researches to study on the behavioral aspect of ecommerce decisions and implementations.

IT governance in public universities is yet to be fully appreciated. This is because IT governance is just evolving as a new paradigm to take care of the stakeholders' expectations in leveraging IT with business goals. This study explores issues of IT governance and the use of IDMSS in a public university in Malaysia. The interviews and documents were analysed to generate themes. The findings show the need for effective IT governance in the university. This will enable optimal usage of IT resources, which are expected to have an impact on the university's performance. Moreover, COBIT framework is presented to provide the benchmark of international standards and practices that the university can adopt in the future. Finally, two IDMSS methods are presented for application in this study. This empirical study on IT governance in the context of a public Institute of Higher learning in Malaysia attempts to document the role of IT and the evolution of its practices in the context of a university.

Geographical Information System (GIS) is one of the recent innovation to ease users in locating places. GIS is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. It can also be used by customers in locating business premises. Research related to application of GIS in locating SME business premises especially in Malacca as a tourist state is still very limited. This study used a survey method to produce more generalizable findings. Quantitative procedures for data collection and analysis were rigorously applied to ensure reliability and validity of the findings. A total of 160 usable responses was collected from 400 distributed questionnaires. This study found all variables significant and therefore, all hypotheses were accepted. In the future, researchers may extend this study to other areas to understand more about current usage patterns and reasons for its adoption. Studies which cover non-Malaysian respondents and different education levels can further document different perspectives of GIS adoption.

Decision support systems (DSS) can be helpful tools in university's planning and management. Decision support systems can contribute to efficient exchange of information between experts, stakeholders, decision makers and laypeople. However, intelligent Information technology (IT) governance decision support system for public universities is yet to be thoroughly investigated. This is because IT governance (ITG) is just evolving as a new paradigm to take care the stakeholders' expectations in leveraging IT with business goals. This study explores issues of IT governance and the suggestion for ITG Intelligent decision making support system (IDMSS) in a public university in Malaysia. The interviews and documents were analysed to generate themes. The findings show the need for effective IT governance in the university. This will enable optimal usage of IT resources, which are expected to have an impact on the university's performance. The findings is aligned to Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT) framework and then several proposals from extant researches on IDMSS are described to form a basis for an intelligent ITG DMSS framework suitable for adoption in the context of public Institutes of Higher learning in Malaysia.
