Background Identifying and understanding reasons for being unsure or unwilling regarding intention to be vaccinated against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) may help to inform future public health messages aimed at increasing vaccination coverage. We analyzed a broad array of individual's psychological dispositions with regard to decision-making about COVID-19 vaccination in Japan. Methods A nationally representative cross-sectional web survey was conducted with 30053 Japanese adults aged 20 years or older at the end of February 2021. In addition to the question on the individual's intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19, respondents were asked about their sociodemographic, health-related, and psychological characteristics as well as information sources about COVID-19 and their levels of trust. Also, those who responded ‘not sure’ or ‘no’ regarding intention to take COVID-19 vaccine were asked why. Multinomial logistic regression with sparse group Lasso (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) penalty was used to compute adjusted odds ratios for factors associated with the intention (not sure/no versus yes). Findings The percentages of respondents who answered ‘not sure’ or ‘no’ regarding intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19 vaccine were 32.9% and 11.0%, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, the perceived risks of COVID-19, perceived risk of a COVID-19 vaccine, perceived benefits of a COVID-19 vaccine, trust in scientists and public authorities, and the belief that healthcare workers should be vaccinated were significantly associated with vaccination intention. Several sources of information about COVID-19 were also significantly associated with vaccination intention, including physicians, nurses, and television, medical information sites with lower odds of being unsure or unwilling, and internet news sites, YouTube, family members, and scientists and researchers with higher odds. The higher the level of trust in television as a source of COVID-19 information, the higher the odds of responding ‘not sure’ (odds ratio 1.11, 95% confidence interval 1.01–1.21). We also demonstrated that many respondents presented concerns about the side effects and safety of a COVID-19 vaccine as a major reason for being unsure or unwilling. To decide whether or not to get the vaccine, many respondents requested more information about the compatibilities between the vaccine and their personal health conditions, whether other people had been vaccinated, the effectiveness of vaccines against variants, and doctors’ recommendations. Interpretation Our findings suggest that public health messaging based on the sociodemographic and psychological characteristics of those who are unsure or unwilling regarding intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19 vaccine may help to increase vaccine uptake amongst this population. As persistent behavioural changes, such as increased anxiety-related behaviours, can be predicted based on the phenomenon of psychostimulant-induced neuronal plasticity, the time course (3-, 5- and 10-day time points) of the effects of both a single and repeated (daily for 7 days) i.p. administrations of cocaine (COC) and methamphetamine (MA) on anxiety-related behavioural symptoms in the elevated plus-maze test were examined in mice. Furthermore, based on the reported interactions between brain dopamine versus cannabinoid (CB) receptors and the contribution of CB receptors to the occurrence of persistent anxiety-related behavioural symptoms, the interactions of the agonist CP 55940 (CP) and the endogenous ligands anandamide (arachidonylethanolamide: AEA), 2-arachidonylglycerol (ARA), N-arachidonyldopamine (NADA), noladin ether (NL), and virodhamine (VA) with the COC- or MA-induced anxiety-related behaviours were also studied. In both an acute experiment using a single COC (30 mg/kg) or MA (4 mg/kg) dose and a chronic experiment using repeated COC (15 mg/kg) or MA (2 mg/kg) doses, anxiety-related behavioural symptoms were observed similarly at 3- and 5-day time points, but disappeared at the 10-day time point. Among the CB ligands, the agonists CP, AEA, ARA, NADA, and NL provided strong protective effects against each parameter at 3- and 5-day time points. Therefore, it was concluded that both COC and MA caused persistent anxiety-related behavioural symptoms following both a single and repeated treatments. Since these anxiogenic effects were attenuated by the endogenous CB agonists, the involvement of brain CB receptors was suspected.
During general anesthesia with N(2)O, the intracuff pressure of tapered endotracheal tube cuffs did not increase as rapidly as it did in conventional high-volume, low-pressure cuffs. The pressure in both types of cuffs increased rapidly when exposed to 66% N(2)O, and hence continuous or frequent monitoring is recommended.
The effect of methamphetamine (MAMP) on the ability of males to mate with females and to impregnate them was examined in 8-week-old ICR mice. Male mice that had been administered an intraperitoneal injection of MAMP (15 mg/kg, 7.5 mg/kg, or 3.75 mg/kg) or saline were housed with females 24 or 48 hours later. The vaginal plugs were checked, and the number of births was counted. The effect of MAMP on sperm motility and the serum testosterone (TS) concentration was also examined. Methamphetamine was observed to have harmful effects only at the highest dose level. In the mice housed 24 hours after the injection of 15 mg/kg MAMP, the increase in the cumulative number of vaginal plugs lagged, and the total number of vaginal plugs decreased significantly. A significant decrease was also observed in the total number of births. Methamphetamine, at a dose of 15 mg/kg, decreased sperm motility. The TS concentration decreased initially, then increased.

In the present study, considering the possibility of KT-enhanced toxic effects of other drugs, and KT-induced promotion of an overdose without making the subject aware of the danger due to the attenuation of several painful subjective symptoms, the intraperitoneal (i.p.) KT-induced alterations in behaviors and toxic interactions with popular co-abused drugs, the psychostimulants cocaine (COC) and methamphetamine (MA), were examined in ICR mice.
Acupuncture is commonly performed on acupoints. A comparison of quantitative physiological alterations induced by stimulation on different acupoints has never been performed in the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in humans. Therefore, we investigated changes in blood flow volume (BFV) in the SMA as an indicator of physiological effects induced by stimulation on 3 points. Thirty healthy participants aged 29 ± 10 years (mean ± SD) were enrolled. All participants underwent stimulations on 3 points located in the lower legs: ST36, LR3, and a non-acupoint. Control pertains to a condition with no-stimulation. Stimulation was performed bilaterally with manual rotation of the needles. BFV was measured by ultrasonography before insertion and 10, 20, 30, and 60 minutes after stimulation. Following acupuncture on ST36, BFV increased significantly 20 and 30 minutes after stimulation, compared to BFV before insertion (P < 0.05). Following stimulation on LR3 and the non-acupoint, no significant differences in BFV could be found. Relative to the no-stimulation group, stimulation on LR3, and the non-acupoint, stimulation on ST36 elicited a significant increase in BFV (P < 0.05). The results suggest that stimulation on the different points causes distinct physiological effects in BFV in the SMA.
