Le Sahara algérien aujourd’hui urbanisé, très largement désenclavé et intégré économiquement, représente le centre de gravité économique du pays, du fait de ses vastes réserves en hydrocarbures. Sa configuration spatiale et son fonctionnement actuels résultent de l’évolution sur le temps long des relations complexes entretenues avec les différents pouvoirs s’étant succédé au Maghreb central. Depuis le Moyen Âge, les structures politiques du Nord maghrébin développèrent des interactions particulières avec l’espace saharien, sous-tendues par des considérations avant tout économiques puis par des projets fondamentalement politiques. Appréhender la structuration progressive d’un espace désertique comme le Sahara algérien, invite à mesurer le poids des héritages et les dynamiques de changement que portèrent intrinsèquement les forces politiques en présence dans le Nord du Maghreb.
