The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of dietary protein from maggot meal and earthworm meal to replace fish meal protein in Oreochromis niloticus juvenile feed. The fish used for this experiment come from the experience of the larval phase during which fish were fed with the formulated diets [fish diet (FD), maggot diet (MD) and earthworm diet (ED)] content 40% crude protein and the commercial diet (CD) content 34.5% crude protein. At the end of this larval phase, the average weights were 0.75 ± 1.93, 0.71 ± 3.55, 0.55 ± 2.52 and 0.62 ± 2.52 g for FD, MD, ED and CD respectively. These different weights constitute the initials weights for this experience. In this experimental, the formulated diets (FD, MD and ED) content 30% crude protein and 29.5% crude protein for CD. Fish were fed four times daily to triplicate groups at 10.7% body weight for consecutive 90 days. After these days, fish fed with FD gave significantly higher average daily gain (ADG, 0.3 ± 0.03 g.day -1 ) than MD (0.22 ± 0.18 g.day -1 ). Fish fed with ED had the lowest ADG (0.14 ± 0.12 g.day -1 ). The specific growth rate (SGR) were higher in fish group fed with FD, MD and CD and shows no significant difference (p > 0.05) compared to ED. Feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and survival rate (SR) show no significant difference (p > 0.05) in all the test. The production cost of 1 kg of fish (PC) and the carcass chemicals composition were evaluated. In conclusion, these results of this study indicate the possibility of completely using maggot meal as a source protein in the diet of O. niloticus juvenile to increase the growth of fish and reduce the cost of 1 kg of fish produced.
RELATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS OF NATURAL AND SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD IN NILE TILAPIA OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS FEEDING IN CAPTIVITY ABSTRACTStudies on feeding periods, daily ration and relative artificial and natural food consumption in populations of juveniles (6 g -56 -concrete basins (juvenile) and eight ponds (sub-adult and adult). Fish were caught at three hourly intervals. Stomach contents of different populations were microscopically analysed. The gut content weights were submitted to the feeding model MAXIMS to determine the ingestion, evacuation rates and daily ration. Two peak feeding periods were evident. The fish showed diurnal diel feeding periodicity. Outside the food distribution periods (9 h and 15 h), the gut contents were mostly composed of natural food in juvenile and sub-adult populations. In addition, in adult population, artificial food was more important from 9 h to 24 h. outside this period, the gut content in each fish population was only constituted of natural food. The daily rations were about 10 %, 6.7 % and 3.7 % respectively for the juvenile, sub-adult and the adult. In that order, the consumed natural food represented 4 % 2.3 % and 1 %. Respective values of the artificial food estimated were 6 %, 4.45 % and 2.7 % for the juvenile, sub-adult and the adults.
Fish feeding is one of the major constraints of tropical fish farming development. To improve the growth of farmed tilapia, and above all reduce production costs, a feeding trial was conducted at the Société Agro-Piscicole de la Mé (Côte d'Ivoire) in 2021. This trial has consisted to assess the effects of two extruded practical diets (ACOT and ACOP) and an imported extruded diet (Le Gouessant) (as reference AR) on the zootechnical performances of Oreochromis niloticus and their cost-benefit. The basic compositions of practical diets were: ACOP (soybean oil cake, coconut oil cake, rice bran and wheat bran) and ACOT (soybean oil cake, cottonseeds oil cake, rice bran and wheat bran). The experimental fish (51.72 g) were fed three times daily (9h, 11h and 15h). Three replicate ponds were assigned to each of the dietary treatments (stocking density: 2 fish/m2). After 180-day feeding, the best feed conversion ratio (2.06) and daily growth (3.24 g/d) were obtained with the diet AR, followed by the diet ACOT (2.22 and 2.98 g/d, respectively). Fat deposition (10%) was higher in fish reared on diet AR compared to those of fish reared on the practical diets ACOT (8.9%) and ACOP (6.1%). Compared to AR, diets ACOP and ACOT reduced the feed cost price by 76% and cost of feeding per unit of weight gain by 72% and 75%, respectively. This study has showed that, best use of local agricultural by-products in tilapia feeding can reduce the cost of production and improve farm production and the profitability.
