A novel multiband rhombic slot antenna with a truncated corner is proposed for wireless local area network (WLAN) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) applications simultaneously. By introducing a pair of straight strips and two etched ∩‐shaped slots, the proposed antenna can operate in multibands. The prototype of the proposed antenna has been successfully constructed and tested. The 10 dB return loss bandwidths of them are 550 MHz (3.15–3.70 GHz) and 920 MHz (5.05–5.97 GHz), respectively, which can cover both the WLAN bands (5.15–5.35 GHz and 5.725–5.825 GHz) and the WiMAX bands (3.4–3.6 GHz and 5.25–5.85 GHz). In addition, good monopole‐like radiation characteristics with sufficient antenna gains are obtained over the operating bands. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A low‐cost microstrip filter antenna with a monopole‐like radiation pattern suitable to be embedded inside a RF front end of wireless communication systems is presented. The filter antenna comprises two square open‐loop resonators, a coupled line, and a microstrip antenna with an impedance transformation line. The microstrip antenna is excited by the coupled line, which is treated as the admittance inverter in filter design. The microstrip antenna performs as not only a radiator but also the last resonator of the bandpass filter. Therefore, the transmission loss between the filter and the antenna is reduced. The patch of the microstrip antenna is stacked above the system circuit board of the RF front end. In this case, the design can fully integrate the circuit board of the RF front end into an internal filter‐antenna solution. The design procedure of the filter antenna follows the circuit approach—synthesis of bandpass filters. The measured results show good agreement with the simulated ones. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this letter, a novel and compact ultra‐wideband (UWB) bandpass filter with dual sharply notched bands based on a novel simplified composite right/left‐handed (SCRLH) resonator is presented.The basic UWB BPF comprises a stub‐loaded multiple‐mode resonator and two interdigital coupled lines. The SCRLH resonator is studied and introduced to obtain the dual notched bands. The proposed filter is simulated, fabricated, and measured, with good agreement between the simulated and measured results. The two notched bands of the BPF centered at 5.8 and 8.7 GHz have 10‐dB fractional bandwidths of about 2.6 and 3.4%, respectively. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract-A novel microstrip grid array antenna that is simultaneously high in gain and wide in bandwidth is proposed. To enhance its bandwidth, the antenna adopts elliptically shaped and variably dimensioned radiation elements as well as a linearly tapered ground plane, and is optimized by a parallel genetic algorithm (GA) on a cluster system. A prototype antenna was fabricated and tested. Results of simulation and measurement agree well and show the antenna exhibits encouraging properties, e.g., a maximum gain of approximately 15.1 dBi at 5.8 GHz; the |S 11 | < −10 dB bandwidth and the 3 dB gaindrop bandwidth are 25.6% (from 5.03 GHz to 6.51 GHz) and 27.6% (from 5.0 GHz to 6.6 GHz), respectively, of the center frequency, both of which are much wider than that of conventional microstrip grid array antennas. Moreover, the overlap between the antenna's impedance bandwidth and the gain bandwidth results in a wide effective operating frequency bandwidth of 25.6%, which is the largest so far achieved for microstrip grid-array antennas.

A novel compact microstrip‐fed tri‐band monopole antenna for WLAN and WiMAX applications is presented in this letter. Hybrid Strips including an L‐shaped strip and a meandered strip are used to generate three resonances in the monopole antenna. Due to the use of a meandered line structure, the antenna size is reduced to 38 × 20 × 1 mm3 only. Compared to the existing designs, the proposed antenna has a size 30, 55, and 70% of the designs in [1–3], respectively. To investigate the performance of antenna versus key antenna design parameters, results of a parametric study are presented. Simulated surface current is also shown. To validate the concept, one antenna prototype is implemented and tested, and the measured results show that the antenna can achieve good performance for WLAN 2.4/5.8 GHz and WiMAX 3.5 GHz applications.
