The aim of this study was to further investigate the prevalence of infection and genotype of hepatitis E virus (HEV) among different species of animals, people whose works are related to pigs and the general population in the suburb of Beijing, China. Serum and faecal samples were collected from 10 animal species and humans. Anti-HEV was detected by enzyme immunoassays (EIA); HEV RNA was amplified by reverse transcription-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nPCR) method. PCR products were cloned and sequenced. The isolated swine HEV sequences were analysed phylogenetically. The positive rates of serum anti-HEV in swine, cattle, milk cow, horse, sheep, donkey, dog, duck, chicken, pig farm workers and slaughterhouse workers, and general population were 81.17% (802/988), 25.29% (66/261), 14.87% (40/269), 14.29% (40/280), 9.30% (53/514), 0 (0/25), 0 (0/20), 2.53% (8/316), 3.03% (7/231), 58.73% (37/63), 35.87% (66/184) and 20.06% (538/2682), respectively. The anti-HEV prevalence in adult swine (≥ 6 months) and younger swine (≤ 3 months) was 91.49% (591/646) and 61.7% (211/342), respectively. The positive rate of HEV RNA in young swine faeces was 47.94% (93/194). All 93 isolates from the younger swine shared 87.8-100% nucleotide homology with each other and had identities of 75.6-78.9%, 73.9-76.1%, 76.4-80.6% and 83.1-95.0% with the corresponding regions of genotypes 1-4 HEV, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all HEV isolates belong to genotype 4, subgenotype 4d. These results suggest a potential risk of zoonotic transmission of HEV from younger swine to farmers who rear pigs.

The existence of various land surfaces always leads to more difficulties in cloud detection based on satellite observations, especially over bright surfaces such as snow and deserts. To improve the cloud mask result over complex terrain, an unbiased, daytime cloud detection algorithm for the Visible and InfRared Radiometer (VIRR) on board the Chinese FengYun-3A polar-orbiting meteorological satellite is applied over the northwest region of China. The algorithm refers to the concept of the clear confidence level from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the unbiased structure of the CLoud and Aerosol Unbiased Decision Intellectual Algorithm (CLAUDIA). Six main channels of VIRR centered at the wavelengths of 0.455, 0.63, 0.865, 1.595, 1.36, and 10.8 μm are designed to estimate the degree of a pixel's cloud contamination judged by the clear confidence level. Based on the statistical data set during four months (January, April, July, and October) in 2010, seasonal thresholds are applied to improve the accuracy of the cloud detection results. Flags depicting snow and water are also generated by the specific threshold tests for special surfaces. As shown in image inspections, the cloud detection results over snow and deserts, adopting the proposed scheme, exhibit better correlations with true-color images than the VIRR official cloud mask results do. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated in detail for four seasons in 2011, using cloud mask products from MODIS and the ground-based observations. The evaluation is based on, overall, 47 scenes collocated with MODIS and 96 individual matchups between VIRR and the ground-based observations from two weather stations located in the research region. The quantitative validations suggest that the estimations of clear-sky regions have been greatly improved by the proposed algorithm, while a poor identification of the cirrus clouds occurs over deserts

In this work, we successfully applied the Fray-Farthing-Chen Cambridge electro-reduction process on the preparation of chromium from chromium oxide, and for the first time, the synthesis of ferrochromium alloy from chromium oxide and iron oxide mixture and the chromite ore in molten calcium chloride. The present work systematically investigated the influences of sintered temperature of the solid precursor, electrochemical potential, electrolysis temperature and time on the products by using a set of advanced characterization techniques, including XRD and SEM/EDS analyses. In particular, our results show that this process is energy-friendly and technically-feasible for the direct extraction of ferrochromium alloy from chromite ore. Our findings thus provide useful insights for designing a novel green process to produce ferrochromium alloy from low-grade chromite ore or stainless steel slag.
