Industrial Plantation Forest of Acacia mangium for pulp industry in Indonesia has declined its productivity due to a decrease in the quality of soil on the second cycle and thereafter. Therefore, the alternative raw material for pulp has to be found as a substitute for Acacia mangium. Research on the various ages of Acacia crassicarpa (4; 5 and 6 years old) as the pulp raw material has been done. Pulp was prepared using the kraft process. The optimum cooking condition with target Kappa Number of 15 ± 1 was obtained at 20-22% active alkali, 30% sulfidity, temperature of 165ºC, liquor ratio 1:4 and H factor of 1300. Pulp was then bleached using ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) process with the sequence of ODEDED and XDEDED. Results showed that pulp yield was high enough and meet the standard requirement according to SNI 6107:2009, Pulp Kraft Putih Kayudaun (LBKP). hollocellulose content of Acacia crassicarpa (79,99-80,87%) and α cellulose content (43,33-48,62%) were higher compared to those of Acacia mangium (<79% and <43%) respectively, while lignin and extractive contents were significantly low. It was found that Acacia crassicarpa of 5 years old resulted in better bleached kraft pulp compared to those of 4 and 6 years old. It is concluded that Acacia crassicarpa has a good prospect to be developed in Industrial Plantation Forest as raw material for pulp. Oleh sebab itu perlu dicari bahan baku alternatif pengganti Acacia mangium. Untuk itu telah dilakukan penelitian terhadap Acacia crassicarpa berbagai umur yaitu 4 ; 5 dan 6 tahun. Pembuatan pulp kertas dilakukan dengan proses kraft. Kondisi pemasakan yang optimal dan memenuhi target bilangan Kappa 15 ± 1, diperoleh pada penggunaan alkali aktif 20-22%, sulfiditas 30%, suhu 165ºC, rasio 1:4 dan faktor H 1300. Pemutihan pulp dilakukan dengan proses ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) yang dikenal ramah lingkungan dengan tahapan ODEDED dan XDEDED. Hasil pulp kraft putih mempunyai rendemen cukup tinggi dan memenuhi pesyaratan spesifikasi SNI 6107:2009, Pulp Kraft Putih Kayudaun (LBKP) kecuali indeks sobek. Kayu Acacia crassicarpa mempunyai kadar holoselulosa (79,99-80,87%) dan selulosa alfa (43,33-48,62%) yang cukup tinggi bila dibandingkan dengan Acacia mangium (<79% dan <43%), serta kadar lignin dan ekstraktif yang cukup rendah. Kayu Acacia crassicarpa umur 5 tahun menghasilkan pulp kraft putih paling baik dibandingkan umur 4 dan 6 tahun. The use of xylanase in pulp bleaching process is intended to reduce chemicals consumption in pulp industry that still using chlorine compounds (chlorine dioxide), so the bleaching stage needs to be modified without reducing the quality of dissolving pulp. Dissolving pulp was produced from six-year-old Acacia crassicarpa as raw material by the Prehydrolysis-Kraft process, then the pulp was bleached with the ECF (elemental chlorine free) process using xylanase (X) and oxygen (O) as comparison at the early stage of bleaching. The sequences of process include X/ODEDED (xylanase or oxygen; chlorine dioxide; extraction-1; chlorine dioxide-1; extraction-2; chlorine dioxide -2). Results showed that the dissolving pulp with active alkali of 22%, sulphidity of 30%, the temperature of 165oC, and the ratio of 1:4 is the optimal condition. Cellulose content, viscosity and brightness were above 94%, 6.2 cP and 88% ISO, respectively.The dissolving pulp produced with the application of xylanase has better quality than the oxygen one, and meets the requirement according to Indonesia National Standard (SNI 0938:2010, pulp rayon).Keywords: Acacia crassicarpa, xylanase, Prehydrolysis-Kraft, dissolving pulp, rayon pulpABSTRAKPenggunaan xilanase pada proses pemutihan pulp dimaksudkan untuk mengurangi konsumsi bahan kimia yang digunakan selama ini di industri pulp, yang masih menggunakan senyawa klorin (klorin dioksida), untuk itu perlu dilakukan modifikasi pada tahap pemutihannya tanpa mengurangi kualitas dissolving pulp yang dihasilkan. Pembuatan dissolving pulp dilakukan menggunakan bahan baku kayu Acacia crassicarpa berumur 6 tahun dengan proses Prahidrolisa–Kraft, selanjutnya pulp diputihkan dengan proses ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) menggunakan xilanase (X) dan oksigen (O) sebagai pembanding pada awal pemutihan dengan 6 tahapan proses, yaitu X/ODEDED (xilanase atau oksigen; klorin dioksida; ekstraksi-1; klorin dioksida-1; ekstraksi-2; klorin dioksida-2) dengan perlakuan oksigen sebagai pembanding. Hasil pembuatan dissolving pulp dengan alkali aktif 22%, sulfiditas 30%, suhu 165oC, rasio 1:4 adalah kondisi yang optimal. Kandungan selulosa, viskositas dan derajat cerah yang diperoleh masing-masing yaitu di atas 94%, 6,2 cP dan 88% ISO. Kualitas dissolving pulp hasil pemutihan dengan penambahan xilanase lebih tinggi daripada menggunakan oksigen dan memenuhi persyaratan spesifikasi SNI 0938:2010, pulp rayon. Oil Palm Trunk (OPT) is a non-wood cellulosic raw material which is not yet widely utilized in pulping and papermaking. Research on the utilization of abundant Oil Palm Trunk (OPT) from Sabah (Malaysia) and Lebak (West Java Province) for pulp production was carried out using kraft and soda anthraquinone processes with active alkali (AA) of 13-17%. The raw material was chipped and depithed as pretreatment. Bleaching of pulp was carried out using Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) process. Analysis of raw material covered physical and chemical properties, and fiber morphology. Both OPT fibers were classified into the moderate fiber length (1.05-1.37 mm). Sabah OPT were very bulky with the chips pile density of 102.16 kg/m3 and 62.91 kg/m3 for undepithed and depithed OPT, respectively. The physical properties of OPT pulps were comparable to that of Acacia mangium pulp. With respect to the bleachability and physical properties, pulping of Lebak OPT using kraft or soda-anthraquinone process with AA of 15% were considered as optimum condition. Depithing on Sabah OPT with high pith content could increase physical properties of pulp. ODEoDnD bleaching sequence on pulps from Sabah OPT gave satisfactory results with respect to the physical properties. Since Sabah OPT had a high pith content, the yields of bleached pulp were relatively low (24.67-26.73%). Penelitian tentang pemanfaatan Batang Kelapa Sawit (BKS) dari Sabah (Malaysia) dan Lebak (Provinsi Jawa Barat) yang berlimpah untuk produksi pulp menggunakan proses kraft dan soda antrakuinon dengan alkali aktif (AA) kisaran 13-17% telah dilakukan. Penyerpihan dan proses depithing bahan baku dilakukan sebagai perlakuan awal. Pemutihan pulp dilakukan menggunakan Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF). Analisis bahan baku mencakup sifat fisik dan kimia, serta morfologi serat. Kedua serat BKS dapat diklasifikasikan sebagai serat moderat dengan panjang 1,05-1,37 mm. BKS dari Sabah sangat ruah dengan densitas tumpukan serpih masing-masing 102,16 kg/m3 untuk yang belum di-depithing dan 62,91 kg/m3 untuk yang telah di-depithing. Sifat fisik pulp BKS sebanding dengan pulp dari Acacia mangium. Sehubungan dengan kemampuan pemutihan dan sifat fisik, pembuatan pulp BKS dari Lebak menggunakan proses kraft atau soda-antrakuinon dengan AA 15% adalah kondisi optimal. Depitihing BKS dari Sabah dengan kandungan pith yang tinggi dapat meningkatkan sifat fisik pulp. Pemutihan dengan urutan ODEoDnD untuk pulp BKS dari Sabah memberikan hasil sifat fisik yang memuaskan. BKS dari Sabah memiliki kandungan pith yang tinggi sehingga rendemen pulp yang diputihkan relatif rendah (24,67-26,73%).
