PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Glândula acessória, genitália, morfologiaABSTRACT -The anatomy of the internal organs of the male reproductive apparatus (MRA) of adults and pupae was compared among 51 species of bees, including representatives of six families. Four different types of MRA were found. The type I is present in males of the less derived families (Colletidae, Andrenidae, and Halictidae) and is characterized by three seminiferous tubules per testis, which are almost completely enveloped by the scrotal membrane. The type II is an intermediary between types III and I and is present in Melittidae and Megachilidae, as well as in some Apidae studied, being characterized by post-vesicular deferent ducts outside the scrotal membrane and by three or four seminiferous tubules per testis, except for Apis mellifera L., which has a secondarily increased number of tubules. Type III was only found in the Apidae studied and is characterized by separately encapsulated testes and genital ducts (except for the post-vesicular deferent duct). Accessory glands are well developed, and the ejaculatory duct is thickened with fissures in its wall, which may also occur in the type II. Type IV is present exclusively in the tribe Meliponini, and is characterized by the absence of accessory glands.
Sounds are an important part of the communication behavior, the so-called dances, of the honey bee. Stingless bees, which do not use dances for communication, use sound signals to indicate the existence and, in some cases, the distance of a feeding place. The social organization of communities of stingless bees is more primitive than that of honey bees, yet certain commonfeatures of communication behavior in these two groups lead to a new hypothesis of the evolution of dancing behavior of the honey bee.
In a population of the social bee Meh'pona subnitida of about 200 hives, from Mossor6, Northeastern Brazil, 54 hives were sampled and studied electrophoretically as far as the alleles Est-3 s, Est-3 M and Est-3 P were concerned. Males are produced by eggs laid by workers (no more than 4 in the same day) and by the queen. It was estimated that 61.2 ~ of the drones are sons of the queen and 38.8 are sons of the workers. With these values the effective number (Ne) was estimated in 395.80 which is 24~o higher than in a model in which all males are sons of the queen.
