Origin of males in Melipona subnitida estimated from data of an isozymic polymorphic system

Abstract: In a population of the social bee Meh'pona subnitida of about 200 hives, from Mossor6, Northeastern Brazil, 54 hives were sampled and studied electrophoretically as far as the alleles Est-3 s, Est-3 M and Est-3 P were concerned. Males are produced by eggs laid by workers (no more than 4 in the same day) and by the queen. It was estimated that 61.2 ~ of the drones are sons of the queen and 38.8 are sons of the workers. With these values the effective number (Ne) was estimated in 395.80 which is 24~o higher than… Show more

“…Species where workers lack functional ovaries and are therefore fully sterile were excluded. All genetic studies used estimates of WPM that took into account the power of the genetic markers to detect workers' sons using either exclusion or maximum likelihood approaches (e.g., Contel and Kerr 1976;Owen and Plowright 1982;Hastings et al 1998;Tó th et al 2002b). Behavioral studies were retained only when they gave reliable information on the percentage of eggs that were worker laid and the probability of worker-laid eggs being reared into adulthood.…”

“…M. subnitida. Male parentage has been investigated using allozymes (Contel and Kerr 1976) and behavioral study Koedam et al 2005). The estimate of WPM for the behavioral studies was taken directly from the published sources.…”

“…Contel and Kerr (1976) considered that the presence of worker-produced males will increase N e because of the increased number of 'genetically active' females. In contrast, Crozier and Pamilo (1996) predicted that worker reproduction decreases N e , despite there being more breeding females, because an extra round of gametic sampling is introduced in each generation and the rate of genetic drift is enhanced.…”

“…However, in many eusocial insects the workers have fully functioning ovaries and contribute a considerable proportion of the males. Contel and Kerr (1976) using genetic evidence estimated that 39 per cent of the males were sons of workers in a population of the stingless bee Melipona subnitida. Mixed male parentage is also common in wasps.…”
