Reading Interest and Reading Comprehension : A Correlational Study

The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ reading interest and reading comprehension. The method used in this study was quantitative and the technique used was a correlational study. The population of the research was taken from students of the eighth grade of SMP Ahmad Dahlan Kota Jambi. The numbers of the population were 47 students. The Total sampling which used all the population was applied as the technique in taking the sample of the research. The data were obtained by using two instruments which were reading interest questionnaires and reading comprehension tests. To measure the correlation Spearman’s Rho was used. The result of this study showed that there was a high correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension. It was proven by coefficient correlational between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension was r (0.983), it means those variables were significantly correlated. The result of analyzing the significant value is 0.01, it means that 0.01<0.05, thus, the null hypothesis (Ho) rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah ada hubungan antara minat baca siswa dan kemampuan membaca mereke. Metode yang di gunakan dalam penelitian ini dengan menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif melalui penelitian korelasi. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VIII SMP Ahmad Dahlan Kota Jambi. Jumlah populasi adalah 47 siswa. Pengambilan sampel penelitian diperoleh melalui total sampling. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan kuesioner untuk mengukur minat baca siswa dan memberikan tes pada siswa untuk mengetahui level pemahaman membaca siswa. Untuk mengukur korelasi peneliti menggunakan teori Spearman’s Rho. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi yang tinggi antara minat baca dan pemahaman membaca. Terbukti dari hasil perhitungan korelasi ditemukan bahwa hubungan antara minat baca dan pemahaman membaca siswa adalah r (0.983), ini menunjukkan bahwa variabel tersebut memiliki korelasi yang signifikan. Hasil dari signifikansi adalah 0.01, hal ini menunjukkan bahwa 0.01<0.05. Human and long-tailed macaque conflict in Central Java, Indonesia

Long-tailed macaques are highly adaptive in various types of habitats. Their behaviour who are accustomed to living in groups with specific activities greatly affects the home range in getting food. They have ecological and cultural values for a particular community; unfortunately, it was well known as an agricultural crop pest. Quality of the habitat to be one determinant factor of macaques disruptions. The purposes of the study are to understand the conditions of conflict humans and macaques in Central Java that used as a reference in determining solutions. Data analyzed descriptively from various reports and research findings. The data collected identified from 2011 to 2019. Disturbance of long-tailed macaque in Central Java occurs at least 15 regencies with the population reaching thousands of individuals of damage to crops and even enter settlements. The macaque's behaviour that is considered detrimental causes conflicts with humans which at the end, creating various handling efforts ranging from expulsion to hunting. Some research findings show that people's perceptions of wild animals will affect efforts to resolve or mitigate the problem of human conflict with wildlife and negative attitudes can cause adverse effects for conservation efforts.

The objectives of this study were to determine whether or not there was a significant effect of using REDW ( Read, Examine, Decide, Write ) strategy on reading comprehension and to know the significant difference of reading comprehension between students who are taught by using REDW (Read, Examine, Decide, Write) strategy and those who are not . The study was conducted at Islamic Junior High School Tarbiyah Islamiyah Jambi. The population in this study were all eighth graders, each class consisted of less than 30 students. The researcher used REDW strategy in class 8B as the experimental class and class 8A used conventional method as control class. This research used quantitative – experimental approach. The design of study was quasi-experimental design, it was the pretest-posttest non- equivalent group design. The data was collected by a test as research instruments, there were two test: pre-test and posttest. From the results of the test, the independent t-test calculation in posttest score in both groups showed that the significant value was higher than level of significance (0.870 > 0.05). It indicated that there was the significant difference between experimental and control group. Moreover, the paired t-test calculation showed the result of paired sample t-test (5.949 < 0.05) in which there was a significant effect of using REDW strategy on students reading comprehension.

This study aims to assess and analyse the sorts of speech functions used by teachers in the tenth grade at one vocational high school in Jambi, Indonesia, and to identify the most prevalent kind. The study was carried out using descriptive qualitative research and descriptive analysis design. In this study, data were triangulated through observation and documentation. The study's targets were English teachers, and the transcribed data was divided into three categories of language functions. Holmes' concept is applied to classify speech functions. There are three types of utterance functions: expressive, imperative, and referential. The results showed that out of 60 speech functions, the directive function was applied by instructors the most frequently, accounting for 31 of them (51.66%). Directive one is the main reason, as it delivers interaction by directing and requesting the student. The study recommends that there are still many types of speech functions, but alternatively, directives are more prominent. Other researchers can gather data from many sources, including Instagram's English-language account, an English newspaper or magazine, and many more. The current study encourages English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers to complete a task and determine an assignment for future research. Given the implications of directive functions for English teachers in teaching speaking skills and the ability to inquire about something and command and request learners to perform something.

Jumlah penduduk Kota Surabaya dari tahun 2014 sampai 2015 mengalami peningkatan sebesar 4,45%. Lahan pertanian di Kota Surabaya mengalami penyusutan lahan sebesar 75 hektar setiap tahunnya. Peningkatan jumlah penduduk Kota Surabaya berbanding terbalik dengan ketersediaan lahan pertanian. Solusinya adalah menerapkan konsep baru urban farming. Hasil optimasi eksisting menghasilkan intensitas tanam sebesar 289% dengan pola tanam padi-palawija-palawija, sedangkan optimasi rencana menghasilkan intensitas tanam sebesar 240% dengan pola tanam palawija-palawija (hidroponik tingkat atas), intensitas tanam sebesar 311% dengan pola tanam palawija-palawija-palawija (hidroponik tingkat bawah), dan budidaya ikan lele sistem bioflok. Kebutuhan air rencana sebesar 3,63x106 liter sedangkan ketersediaan tampungan air total sebesar 3,75x106 liter. Nilai Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) eksisting dan rencana masing-masing sebesar 0,09 dan 1,43. Nilai Net Present Value (NPV) eksisting dan rencana masing-masing sebesar Rp-115.719.410,06 dan Rp2.956.052.297,26. Nilai Payback Period (PP) eksisting dan rencana membutuhkan 12,39 tahun dan 1,7 tahun.

Safety Factors Investigation Based on FEM and LEM Approach in Toll Road Embankment Slope

The Pejagan-Pemalang toll road which is a Section II project was designed at different embankment heights on soft soil subgrade. The process involved investigating the slope stability of these embankments through the determination of the safety factor. This can be achieved using different methods such as the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and the finite element method (FEM) which are considered the standard approaches. However, the presentation of different numerous results for the safety factors (SF) in landslide calculations usually makes it difficult for the engineer to understand some uncertain conditions. Therefore, this study aims to determine the safety factors using LEM and FEM approaches at different conditions. The soil subgrade used was in SPT and three models of the properties were obtained. Moreover, a Geo-Studio program with Slope-W analysis was applied using the Morgenstern-Price for the LEM and PLAXIS for the FEM. The height was varied at 2 to 8m with the slope H: V at 1:1, 1:1.5, and 1:2. The simulation was conducted at three different levels of groundwater. The results showed that the height, embankment geometry, and groundwater levels were affected in the SF analysis using the two methods. It was also discovered in all categories that higher embankments had smaller SF while the higher angle of slope produced a higher SF. Furthermore, the properties of the soft soil were observed to have influenced the SF result as indicated by the narrow difference in the correlation between the embankment height and SF. The results of the LEM and FEM were also compared and the observations were explained. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a guide for engineers, especially those in road toll projects, to determine the optimum model needed to predict slope failure in embankments for toll roads.

Improved informatiAbstractcommunication technology, causing smart city initiatives have developed in major cities in the world since the last decade. Smart cities aim to create sustainable urban development. Through the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia implemented the “100 cities to smart city” program, which began in 2017. The purpose of this article is to analyze the Application Programming Interface (API) as the Smart City backbone in Samarinda as a buffer city for the capital of the Republic of Indonesia in 2024 This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, FGD, observation and emphasizes on document analysis. This study provides the following conclusions. First, Samarinda City Government has carried out various transformations and innovations so that the city of Samarinda is competitive and ready to become a buffer city for the Republic of Indonesia’s capital in 2024. Second, infrastructure development is necessary as a means of supporting smart cities. To facilitate the implementation of API in Samarinda City. Recommendations from this research for the successful implementation of API in Samarinda City as a buffer for the nation’s capital in 2024 are as follows. First, there needs to be a more comprehensive strengthening of policies and regulations because there are regional apparatus of the Samarinda City Government that have an information system that is not integrated with the API. Second, there needs to be an increase in human resources, especially the State Civil Apparatus and / or Civil Servants, directly related to API. This study proves that there are no consolidated standards or best practices for smart governance because each city can implement different governance frameworks and models in achieving smart cities according to their local wisdom and city resources.

Think Pair and Share for Junior High School Students' Reading Comprehension

Abstrak The objectives of this study was to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of the using Think-Pair and Share technique at seventh grade students’ reading comprehension of Junior High School Satu Atap Bertam. This research was conducted at first grade students of Junior high school Satu Atap Bertam. This school is located in Muaro Jambi, there are two classes of seventh grade students, and this school uses school based curriculum. In conducting the research, the writer used the experimental research, and the design of the experimental research was a quasi-experimental research. The result of the research found two things: First, the writer has computed the two means score by using t -test formula; the value of t-test was higher than the value of t-table. It indicated that there was a different on the students’ reading comprehension that was taught by using Think Pair and Share technique. Second, the result of the analysis indicated there was a significant difference between the students’ reading comprehension taught by using Think Pair and Share technique and those who were not.
