Background:The exposure of free radicals can induce oxidative stress. In the liver, this process will cause impaired liver function. Oxidative stress can be inhibited by antioxidants. Arrowroot tubers (Maranta arundinacea) contains phenolic, flavonoid, alkaloids and saponin compound that are potential as antioxidants. Objective: Determine the effect of ethanolic extract of arrowroot tubers (Maranta arundinacea) against oxidative stress using the parameter of MDA, SGPT and SGOT level in ethanol-induced rats. Methods: Animal models were divided into 5 groups, in which each group contained 6 rats. Group I (normal) and group II (control) was induced with CMC Na 0,5%. Group III, IV and V were given ethanolic extract of arrowroot tubers in the dosage of 125, 250 and 500 mg/Kg/day respectively. The extract was administered orally for 14 days. Induction of ethanol 5 gram/ KgBW was administered orally 1 hour after the last administration on day 14th except for group I. On day 15th, the animal blood was drawn to measure the levels of SGPT and SGOT, then the animals were sacrificed and their organs were analyzed to measure the levels of MDA in the liver. Data obtained in the form of MDA, SGPT and SGOT levels were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. Results: There is statistically significant difference between the utilization of ethanolic extract of arrowroot tubers (Maranta arundinacea) group with the control group in reducing the concentration of MDA (p<0,05), SGPT, and SGOT (p<0,05).
Conclusions:The ethanolic extract of arrowroot tubers (Maranta arundinacea) is able to reduce the concentration of MDA, SGPT and SGOT in ethanol-induced rats.
Background: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a major role in myocardial damage during acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study aimed to determine the antioxidant and antiapoptotic activities of an ethanolic extract from Ulva lactuca L. (EEUL) against AMI.Methods: Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into six groups: one control group and five treatment groups. Treatment group II was given 85 mg/kg body weight (BW) of isoproterenol (ISO). Group III, IV and V were given ISO and EEUL at 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg BW, respectively. Group VI were given 10 mg/kg BW of ISO and melatonin. EEUL and melatonin were orally administered for 28 days. ISO was injected subcutaneously on day 29 and 30 to chemically induce AMI. On day 31, blood was collected for antioxidant assay and heart tissues were collected for histological examination.Results: The activity of catalase (CAT), an endogenous antioxidant, in the EEUL-treatment groups was significantly increased compared to the ISO-treatment group (P < 0.001). The EEULtreatment groups showed significantly decreased expression of caspase-3 (P < 0.001) and better myocardial tissue morphology.Conclusion: EEUL possibly protects against AMI because of its antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties.
Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang efek ekstrak etanol rimpang temugiring terhadap kadar trigliserida serum darah tikus. Penelitian ini menggunakan 28 ekor tikus jantan galur Wistar dengan berat badan antara 150-200 gram yang berumur 2-3 bulan.Tikus dibagi menjadi 7 kelompok perlakuan dan setiap kelompok terdiri atas 4 ekor tikus. Kelompok I (Kontrol normal) mendapat perlakuan diet standar (BR II) dan air minum, kelompok II (Kontrol negatif) yang diberi perlakuan diet standar, diet lemak tinggi, dan air minum, kelompok III (Kontrol pensuspensi) yang diberi perlakuan diet standar, diet lemak tinggi, larutan CMC Na dan air minum, kelompok IV (Kontrol positif) yang diberi diet standar, diet lemak tinggi, suspensi gemfibrosil dosis 0,9 mg /kgBB dan air minum, kelompok V, VI, VII, diberikan perlakuan peroral dengan ekstrak etanol temugiring dosis 10 mg /kgBB, 20 mg /kgBB, dan 40 mg/kgBB.. Peningkatan kadar trigliserida diberikan dengan diet lemak tinggi (5 gram lemak sapi dan 10 gram kuning telur) dalam sediaan emulsi pada periode ke-2. Perlakuan ekstrak etanol temugiring diberikan setelah keadaan hipertrigliserida..Penetapan kadar trigliserida dengan metode GPO (Glycerol-3-Phosphate Oxidase). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak etanol temugiring selama 2 minggu berturut-turut dapat menurunkan kadar trigiserida
