Ich habe in ZAW 1925 S. 90 S. die These vertreten, der Dichter der Ebed-Jahwe-(= EJ)Lieder -wahrscheinlich Deuterojesaja selbsthabe in^ einer bestimmten zeitgenössischen Persönlichkeit den Messias gesehen und habe deren Ergehen mit seinen Liedern begleitet. Kurz darauf erschien R. KITTELS Buch "Gestalten und Gedanken in Israel", in dem ich zu meiner Freude in dem Kapitel "Deuterojesaja und der große Blutzeuge* 4 eine ganz ähnliche Auffassung vorfand (vgl. jetzt auch den 3. Band von KITTELS "Geschichte des Volkes Israel" § 34 f.). Dagegen hat W. STAERK in ZAW 1926 S. 242 ff. meine Aufstellungen einer dankenswert eingehenden Kritik unterzogen. Ich darf meine Antikritik mit der Hervorhebung dessen beginnen, was zwischen uns gemeinsam ist.1. Die erste Gemeinsamkeit ist die Ablehnung der Kollektivdeutung (ST. 242 f.), d. h. wir bestreiten nicht, daß im "jetzigen Text von Jes 40-55 unter dem EJ überall das Volk Israel als Gesamtheit verstanden wird -denn das ist unbestreitbar -, wohl aber, daß dies die ursprüngliche Meinung der EJ-Lieder gewesen sei: in ihnen haben wir vielmehr eine nachträgliche Umdeutung eines von Haus aus individuellen EJ. Diese Ablehnung der Kollektivdeutung ist unter den deutschen Alttestamentlern in siegreichem Vordringen begriffen; um so bemerkenswerter ist es, daß bei den amerikanischen Gelehrten, wie mir K. FULLERTONOberlin (Ohio) bei seinem letztjährigen Aufenthalt in Tübingen sagte, die Kollektivisten durchaus in der Überzahl sind; und wenn auch bei uns so erprobte Exegeten wie BUDDE (KAUTZSCH 4 ) und KÖNIG (Jesajakommentar 1926) zäh die Deutung der Lieder auf Israel festhalten, so erwächst dem gewissenhaften Forscher die Pflicht, die Fragen immer neu zu erwägen. Aber es muß dabei bleiben: die Unmöglichkeit der Kollektivdeutung ergibt sich (wenn wir vorläufig 42 f. beiseite lassen, weil die Zugehörigkeit zu den EJ-Liedern bestritten ist) aus 49 5 f., wo nach der einzig möglichen Exegese -wie schon oft bewiesen -der EJ eine Aufgabe an und für Israel hat. Dem Schluß, daß er demnach nicht mit Israel identisch sein kann, sucht KÖNIG dadurch zu entgehen, daß er den EJ-lsrael von dem Israel, an dem dieser arbeitet, unterscheidet: der EJ ist "die treue und deshalb gottgefällige Minorität" des Volkes Israel, die auf das andere Israel, die "ungetreue Majorität" einwirken soll (a. a. O. S. 405 458). In dieser "internen Scheidung Israels" sieht KÖNIG überhaupt den Schlüssel zur Lösung der EJ-Frage (z. B. -S. 375 Anm. l 448 1 Vortrag auf dem 1. I.Es ist beinahe schon zum Dogma geworden, daß das Hohe Lied {= HL) seine Aufnahme in den Kanon nur der allegorischen Erklärung verdanke. Aber dem widerspricht schon eine allgemeine Überlegung. Was man aus dem HL herauslas, die Liebe Jahwes zu seinem Volke Israel, war schon von den großen Propheten, vor allem von Hosea, Jeremia und Deuterojesaja, in klassischen eindringlichen und zu Herzen gehenden Worten ausgesprochen worden; war es da nötig, nur um diesen Gedanken noch einmal auszudrücken, eine Schrift in den Kanon zu nehmen, die mit ihrer Fülle sinnlicher Bilder notwendig immer wieder zu »naturalistischen« Mißverständnissen führen praßte, zumal da sie keinerlei Hinweis enthielt, daß sie anders gemeint war als sie lautete? Wenn man vor ihrem »weltlichen« Gebrauch warnen mußte (s. nachher), wenn man ihre Lektüre dem Juden vor dem 3(K Lebensjahr verbot, wäre es dann nicht pädagogischer gewesen, sie gar nicht in den Kanon aufzunehmen ? 1 Man verlor ja nichts dabei. Außerdem ist es eine religionsgeschichtliche Tatsache, daß ganze Bücher erst dann systematisch allegorisiert werden, wenn sie kanonische oder sonstwie maßgebliche Geltung haben und ihr Inhalt infolge veränderter Zeitanschauungen ihrem autoritativen Charakter nicht mehr entspricht, der dann eben durch die allegorische Deutung wieder hergestellt wird 2 . Die Allegorisierung des HL war also eine Notmaßnahme, die nur durch seine vorherige Zugehörig-keit zum Kanon verständlich wird.Diese allgemeine Überlegung wird durch die Prüfung der (spär-lichen) altjüdischen Angaben bestätigt. Wenn die Rabbinen, unter ihnen Akiba, gegen diejenigen wettern, »die im HL die Stimme schütteln 3 und es so im Hochzeitshause 4 vortragen« (Tosefta San-1 Die dem allegorisierten HL am ehesten verwandten Stücke Hes 16 lind Hes 23 waren schon dadurch vor jedem falschen Gebrauch geschützt, daß sie als Worte Jahwes eingeführt wurden. Ein Vergleich mit diesen Stücken zeigt zugleich, wie unprophetisch das allegorisch verstandene HL war, weil es immer nur von der »Schönheit t, also Gottwohlgefälligkeit des Volkes und nur im Vorbeigehen von seiner Sünde redete. So wurde das umgedeutete HL ein Beleg für den jüdischen Erwählungs-dünkel (nach R. JEHUDA -im Midrasch zu 112 -darf das HL nicht zur Schande, sondern nur zum Ruhm für Israel gedeutet werden); von da aus ist auch das bekannte Urteil R.
