Unter 45 ~ Azimut linear polarisiertes Licht, welches mit einem Einfallswinkel ~ 55 ~ (Polarisationswinkel des Quarztr~gers) vektorabh~ngig absorbierende ,,gelbe" Kaliumschichten durchsetzt, erf~hrt eine relative Phasenverschiebung. Diese wurde als Funktion der Wellenl~nge gemessen. Es zeigte sich, daI3 die Phasenverschiebung einen Nulldurchgang hat, und zwar etwa am Orte des maximalen Lichtverlustes ffir ~]j und dab sie mit der Schichtdicke zunimmt.
InhaltsiibersichtIn der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde das Verhalten des S t a r k -Effekts bei Feldstiirken uiiterhalb von 20000 V/cm gepriift. S t a r k l ) iin Jahre 1913 experimentell gefundene Zerlegung der Wasserstofflinien ergab cine Linear mit der Feldstarke wachsende Aufspaltung der einzelnen Serienglieder derart, daR die Koniponentenabstande ganzzahlige Vielfache eines kleinsten Abstandes sind, der der Feldstarke proportional ist. Als Aufspaltungsfaktor ergab sich iiach ersten Messungen von S t a r k 6,8 -10-5 crn-l.Die ersten erfolgreichen theoretischen Arbeiten von K. Schwarzschild uiid P. Epstein*) lieferten fur diesen Faktor die Grofle einen Wert, der durch spatere Prazisionsmessungen von Steubing und Kass-ner3) zu 6,44 lW5 cin-1 gut bestatigt wurde. Auch die aua der Theorie gezogene Folgerung, daB bei grol3en Feldstarken (grofler als 100'000 Vlcm) ein Effekt zweiter und gegebenenfalls hoherer Ordnung vorliegen m a t e , konnte von R a u s c h v. Traubenberg und Gebauer4) nachgewiesen werden. Die nach der Wellenmechanik von Schrodinger 5, weitergefiihrte Theorie stand in beater nbereinstimmung mit dem Ergebnis der Messungen der vorgenanntcn beiden Autoren, und Schrodinger berechnete auch fiir die Intensitaten der Einzelkomponentcii 1) J.
