Since 1898, when Schenk 1 reported his studies on refractory subcutaneous abscesses caused by a fungus possibly related to the sporotricha, over 200 proved cases and innumerable probable cases of sporotrichosis have been reported. Beurman and his associates made the bulk of these observations and while the clinical picture was different from that described by American authors and certain differences from the original fungus were noted, it is considered that these observations serve only to establish the identity of several subtypes of the same infection.
