Besides temperature at one atmosphere, the applied pressure is another important parameter for influencing and controlling reaction pathways and final reaction products. This is relevant not only for the genesis of natural minerals, but also for synthetic chemical products and technological materials. The present critical review (316 references) highlights recent developments that utilise high pressures and high-temperatures for the synthesis of new materials with unique properties, such as high hardness, or interesting magnetic or optoelectronic features. Novel metal nitrides, oxonitrides as well as the new class of nitride-diazenide compounds, all formed under high-pressure conditions, are highlighted. Pure oxides and carbides are not considered here. Moreover, syntheses under high-pressure conditions require special equipment and preparation techniques, completely different from those used for conventional synthetic approaches at ambient pressure. Therefore, we also summarize the high-pressure techniques used for the synthesis of new materials on a laboratory scale. In particular, our attention is focused on reactive gas pressure devices with pressures between 1.2 and 600 MPa, multi-anvil apparatus at P < 25 GPa and the diamond anvil cell, which allows work at pressures of 100 GPa and higher. For example, some of these techniques have been successfully upgraded to an industrial scale for the synthesis of diamond and cubic boron nitride.

Neutronenbeugungsexperimente führten zur Bestimmung antiferromagnetischer Momentanordnungen der Verbindungen NaMnP, NaMnAs, NaMnSb, NaMnBi, LiMnAs und KMnAs. Für die Natriumverbindungen wurde eine Anordnung gefunden, die sich in der kristallographischen Elementarzelle beschreiben läßt, für LiMnAs und KMnAs ergibt sich eine Verdoppelung der c‐Achse. Die Shubnikov‐Gruppen sind P4/n′m′m′ bzw. P4/n′ce. Die gefundenen Werte für die magnetischen Momente der Manganatome lassen sich mit Kristallfeldgrößen der AMnX‐Strukturen korrelieren.

Durch Reduktion von Gemischen aus Platinmetallpulver und pulverförmigen Oxiden unedler Metalle mit Wasserstoff bzw. Ammoniak zwischen 900°C und 1200°C wurden folgende intermetallische Phasen erhalten: Pt3Al, Pt13Al3, Pt3Sc, Pt5Y, Pt5La; Pt15Be, Pt3Mg, Pt7Mg, Pt2Ca, Pt7Ca2, Pt5Ca, Pt2Sr, Pt3Sr, Pt5Sr; Pt7Li und Pt3Cr. Bei den Pt2Me‐Legierungen handelt es sich um bekannte Laves‐Phasen (Cu2Mg‐Typ). Die Pt5Me‐Verbindungen kristallisieren bis auf Pt5Y im Cu5Ca‐Typ, die Pt3Me‐Phasen, von denen Pt3Al und Pt3Sc strukturell aufgeklärt sind, bis auf Pt3Sr im Cu3Au‐Typ. Zwischen der Pt‐ und der Pt3Me‐Struktur finden sich geordnete Überstrukturphasen; von diesen konnte die Pt7Me‐Struktur vollständig, die Pt13Me3‐Struktur angenähert aufgeklärt werden. Von der Pt15Me‐Phase ist bisher nur bekannt, daß ein dem Pt eng verwandter Aufbau vorliegt, mit einer großen, hexagonal verzerrten Elementarzelle. Der Übergang Pt5Me → Pt2Me wurde am Beispiel der Ca‐Legierungen untersucht. Außer Pt7Ca2 treten zwischen Pt7Ca2 und Pt5Ca noch weitere Überstrukturen auf. Die Raumchemie der Legierungen des Platins mit den Elementen der 1. bis 3. Gruppe des Periodensystems wird besprochen.

The compounds Rb,Mn,Se4, Cs2Mn3Se4, Rb,Mn,Te, The structural related selenides ALiMnSe, and ALiZnSe, and CszMnsTe4 were synthesized by the reaction of alkali metal (A = K, Rb or Cs) were synthesized by analogous reactions. All carbonates with chalcogen and Mn or MnCO, in a stream of these compounds are isotypic and crystallize in the hydrogen charged with chalcogen.BaZn,P,-structure type. Structural investigations show that all compounds crystallize in isotypic atomic arrangements (Cs,Mn,S,-type, space group Ibam, Z = 4). Additionally neutron diffraction experiments were carried out and yielded the spin structures of RbzMn3Se4 and Cs2MnsSe4 (Shubnikov space group Ibam ').

The present work has provided a complete set of assignments for the vibrational spectrum of Rb(2)PtH(6) and Rb(2)PtD(6). To confirm the assignments, a periodic density functional theory (DFT) code has been applied to the analysis of the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectrum of an ionic material for the first time. The work has also provided an explanation for the unusual infrared spectrum of the potassium salt. The most significant aspect of the work is the use of the momentum transfer information provided by an INS chopper spectrometer. The straightforward method employed for the analysis of the data is applicable to any molecular system (organic or inorganic) and demonstrates the potential of these instruments for chemistry. Periodic DFT was also used to study the other A(2)PtH(6) (A = alkali metal) including, the at present, unknown Li salt, which is found to be stable. The DFT studies have also highlighted the crucial role of the cation in removing charge from the transition metal and "hydride" ligand. It is suggested that this is a general occurrence.

Compounds having structural units formed by transition metals and hydrogen have only become known fairly recently. Only the synthesis and structural characterization of ternary metal hydrides A,M,H,, in which A is an alkali or alkaline-earth metal and M is a transition metal, led to the discovery of anionic complex groups of the form [MHJ. Although there are obvious structural similarities to the corresponding halides and oxides, the dynamic properties of the hydride ligand are somewhat unusual and are responsible for numerous phase transformations. Transitions throughout the range from saltlike to metallic behavior make us expect interesting physical properties and applications.
