Summary Iodine Metabolism in Relation to Reproductive Status in Cows Studies were made on the phases of thyroid function as revealed by the determination of thyroid weight, thyroidal total and organic iodine as well as protein bound iodine and thyroid hormone potency in the sera of cows during the stages of estrous cycle, pregnancy and those affected with cystic ovaries. 1. The thyroid fresh weight was maximal in cows at proestrus and relatively increased during pregnancy. 2. The iodine concentration in the thyroid was minimal at estrus and in the cows with cystic ovaries, indicating increased depletion of thyroid hormone from the thyroid as a result of increased estrogen level in the blood. The iodine concentration in the thyroids of cows at proestrus and pregnancy were relatively high. 3. The PBI content of the thyroids was decreased in the case of cows at estrus, during pregnancy and in cows with cystic ovaries. 4. Determination of serum PBI showed a trend towards low levels in estrous cows and in those with cystic ovaries and high values reaching 12.8 micrograms per cent on average in pregnant cows. 5. The thyroid hormone potency of the sera of cows at estrus and those affected with cystic ovaries was relatively high when compared with the other stages of the cycle and during pregnancy. Zusammenfassung Beziehungen zwischen Jodstoffwechsel und Fortpflanzung Bei Kühen wurde die Schilddrüsenfunktion während der verschiedenen Phasen des Brunstzyklus', während der Trächtigkeit und bei Tieren mit Ovarialzysten untersucht. Ergebnisse: 1. Im Proöstrum ist das Gewicht der Schilddrüse am größten. Während der Gravidität erhöht sich das Schilddrüsengewicht noch mehr. 2. Der Jodgehalt der Schilddrüse war während des Östrums sowie bei Tieren mit Ovarialzysten am geringsten. 3. Der Gehalt an proteingebundenem Jod (PBI) nimmt bei Kühen mit Ovarialzysten, sowie während des Östrums und der Gravidität ab. 4. Der PBI‐G‐ehalt ist klein während der Brunst (0,86 mg%) und bei Tieren mit Ovarialzysten (0,82 mg%). Während der Trächtigkeit ist der PBI‐Gehalt hoch (bis 12,8 mg%). 5. Die biologische Aktivität der Schilddrüsenhormone ist während des Östrums und bei Ovarialzysten größer als während der übrigen Zyklusphasen und der Trächtigkeit. Summary The activity of the thyroid glands of buffaloes as related to reproductive stages and ovarian abnormalities was studied. For this purpose the fresh and dry weights of the thyroids and their inorganic and protein‐bound iodine were determined. Histological studies of such glands were also made. It was found that the thyroids were heavier at proestrus and in mid‐and late pregnancy. The protein‐bound iodine content was low at estrus and during pregnancy, especially in the last stages, indicating increased activity of the gland. The epithelial cell height was increased at estrus and the amount of colloid was small. The thyroids of buffaloes with cystic ovaries were relatively active and their colloid was greatly reduced. The thyroids of buffaloes having inactive ovaries were markedly hypoactive. Zusammenfassung Die Schilddrüsenaktivität des ägyptischen Büffels während des Brunstzyklus, während der Trächtigkeit und bei Eierstockerkrankungen Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt die Schilddrüsenaktivität des ägyptischen Büffels in Beziehung zum Sexualzyklus und zu Ovariopathien. Das Frisch‐ und Trockengewicht der Thyreoidea und die Menge des freien und proteingebundenen Jodes (PBI). Die Drüsen wurden auch histologisch untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, daß die Schilddrüsen im Prooestrus, in der Mitte und gegen Ende der Trächtigkeit an Gewicht zunahmen. Die PBI‐Werte waren während der Brunst, während und besonders gegen das Ende der Trächtigkeit, niedrig. Dies spricht für eine erhöhte Tätigkeit der Schilddrüse während der Brunst und der Trächtigkeit. Die Zellen des Drüsenepithels nahmen während des Oestrus an Höhe zu; der Gehalt an Kolloid war gering. Die Schilddrüsen von Büffeln mit Eierstockzysten waren verhältnismäßig aktiv und ihr Kolloid vermindert. Die Tätigkeit der Drüsen von Büffeln mit inaktiven Ovarien hingegen lag deutlich unter der Norm. On a déterminé le poids frais et le poids sec de la thyroïde et la quantité de l'iode libre et de l'iode lié aux protéines (PBI). On a procédé en outre à une étude histologique des glandes. Les résultats montrent que le poids des thyroïdes augmente au cours du prooestre et au milieu et à la fin de la gestation. Les valeurs du PBI sont particulièrement basses pendant l'oestre et pendant la gestation (principalement vers la fin), ce qui indique une activité thyroïdienne accrue. The thyroid hormone level in the serum of 240 sheep (120 males and 120 females) was studied, using the stasis tadpole method, to determine the effects of season and sex on its level. The following results were obtained: The maximal level of thyroid hormone was observed during the winter (Dec. — Feb.) and was about 5 times that obtained during the summer (June — August). Increased day length, as well as high ambient temperature, depressed thyroid activity. The coefficient of correlation and the regression between these factors was estimated. No statistically significant differences in thyroid hormone level were found due to sex in sheep. Zusammenfassung Jahreszeitliche und geschlechtliche Einflüsse auf den Schilddrüsenhormon‐Gehalt des Blutes bei Osimi‐Schafen Bei 240 Schafen (120 männliche, 120 weibliche) wurde der Schilddrüsenhormon‐Gehalt im Serum untersucht (Kaulquappentest), um den Einfluß der Jahreszeit und des Geschlechtes zu bestimmen. Resultate: Im Winter (Dezember—Februar) war der Hormonspiegel am höchsten und zwar ungefähr 5mal höher als im Sommer (Juni—August). Sowohl eine erhöhte Tageslänge als auch Umgebungstemperatur reduzierten die Schilddrüsenaktivität. Der Korrelationskoeffizient und die Regression zwischen diesen Faktoren wurden berechnet. Une augmentation de la durée journalière, de même que de la température ambiante, diminue l'activité thyroïdienne. On calcule le coefficient de corrélation et la régression entre ces deux facteurs. On ne trouve pas de différences significatives spécifiques du sexe dans la teneur en hormone thyroïdienne. Resultados: En el invierno (Diciembre—Febrero), el nivel hormónico era máximo, a saber 5 veces superior que durante el verano (Junio—Agosto). Tanto la longitud aumentada del día como la temperatura ambiente reducían la actividad tiroidea. Se calcularon el coeficiente de correlación y la regresión entre estos factores. No se hallaron diferencias significantes específicas de sexo en el contenido tiroxínico.

1nt:roductionThere seems to be general agreement that the entire process of sexual reproduction is centered around the act of fertilization, and that the latter process is carried out in the ampulla of the fallopian tube. Moreover, it is well known that affections of the oviducts and ovarian bursae, among other factors, contribute to infertility problems in domestic animals. These facts aroused the interest of many workers to study the morphological and pathological characteristics of this tube.The aim of the present work was to inspect the morphological features of the oviducts of Egyptian cows in health and in some common genital affections. Material and MethodsThe fallopian tubes and ovaries of non-gravid genitalia of 800 COWS slaughtered a t Cairo abattoir were collected over a period of one year. The normal morphological features as well as the macroscopical changes which may take place in some pathological affections of these organs and associated structures were investigated.The infundibulum, ovarian bursa and ovaries were examined carefully for ovario-bursa1 adhesions. The ovaries were examined to decide the stage of the estrous cycle and detect any ovarian affections, as described by . The tubes were then dissected, straightened and measured to the nearest millimeter, using a Varnier caliper.The length of the oviducts was measured from the tip of the uterine horn to the thin membranous aponeurosis of the utero-ovarian ligament. The width was measured at three different areas: the fimbriated expansion, the ampulla and the junction of the oviduct with the corresponding uterine horn (isthmus).The different affections of the tube e. g. chronic salpingitis, hydrosalpinx, and pyosalpinx were recorded and described.Statistical analysis of the results in the form of the standard deviation and the " t " test of significance was accomplished according to SNEDECOR (1956).
