Iodine Metabolism in Relation to Reproductive Status in Cows

Abstract: Summary Iodine Metabolism in Relation to Reproductive Status in Cows Studies were made on the phases of thyroid function as revealed by the determination of thyroid weight, thyroidal total and organic iodine as well as protein bound iodine and thyroid hormone potency in the sera of cows during the stages of estrous cycle, pregnancy and those affected with cystic ovaries. 1. The thyroid fresh weight was maximal in cows at proestrus and relatively increased during pregnancy. 2. The iodine concentration in the th… Show more

“…Iodine is actively involved in the functions of all female genitals. The process of reproduction is significant metabolic stress in the genital organs, which can lead to acute iodine deficiency (Abdul-Fadle and Ayoub, 1970;Koshovyj, 2004). Iodine affects the synthesis of thyroid hormones, the activity of which during estrus is higher than in other phenomena of the sexual cycle (Yasothai, 2014).…”
