Variations in Thyroid Status of the Buffalo during the Estrous Cycle, Pregnancy and in Conditions of Ovarian Abnormalities

Abstract: Summary The activity of the thyroid glands of buffaloes as related to reproductive stages and ovarian abnormalities was studied. For this purpose the fresh and dry weights of the thyroids and their inorganic and protein‐bound iodine were determined. Histological studies of such glands were also made. It was found that the thyroids were heavier at proestrus and in mid‐and late pregnancy. The protein‐bound iodine content was low at estrus and during pregnancy, especially in the last stages, indicating increased … Show more

“…In this respect, no reports were recorded previously in one humped camels thus correlate the thyroid gland with pregnancy status. In buffaloes, the histological picture of thyroid gland differed during early pregnancy as compared to mid-and late pregnancy, where a high epithelium and smaller follicular diameter and colloid volume were observed during early pregnancy (Soliman et al, 1973).…”
