Introducción. Las parasitosis intestinales constituyen un importante problema de salud pública por sus altas tasas de prevalencia y amplia distribución mundial, sobre todo en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales, siendo la población infantil la mayormente afectada. Objetivo. Determinar la prevalencia de parásitos intestinales en habitantes de Aripao, comunidad rural del estado Bolívar, Venezuela. Materiales y Métodos. En abril de 2005 se realizó un estudio transversal con 155 habitantes de ambos sexos. De cada uno se obtuvo una muestra fecal la cual fue analizada mediante la técnica de examen directo, métodos de concentración de Kato y formol-éter, cultivo en placa de agar y coloración de Kinyoun. Resultados. La prevalencia de parasitosis intestinal fue de 83.9% (130/155). Las prevalencias por grupos de edad fueron similares (χ2 = 3.037; g.l. = 5). Ambos sexos fueron afectados por igual (p › 0.05). Se diagnosticaron 15 especies de parásitos y/o comensales. Los protozoarios fueron más prevalentes que los helmintos. Blastocystis hominis fue el parásito intestinal más prevalente con 60%. Se diagnosticaron 9 casos de Cryptosporidium parvum y 2 de Cyclospora cayetanensis. Entre los helmintos Ascaris lumbricoides (20%), Trichuris trichiura (9%) y Strongyloides stercoralis (4.5%) resultaron los más comunes. De los parasitados 75.4% resultó poliparasitado (98/130). En este último grupo los parásitos más frecuentemente asociados fueron Blastocystis hominis (75.5%) y Entamoeba coli (48.9%). Conclusión. Se determinó una elevada prevalencia (83.9%) de parásitos intestinales en habitantes de la comunidad rural de Aripao, estado Bolívar, Venezuela, sin predilección por el sexo o la edad y con predominio de los protozoarios, en particular de B. hominis.
The parasitological examination of fecal samples from 98 patients from an Ambulatory Health Center of Soledad, Anzoategui, Venezuela revealed a rather high proportion of results positive for Blastocystis hominis (46.9%). Blastocystis hominis é um dos protozoários mais freqüentemente encontrados no exame parasitológico das fezes. Existem várias controvérsias, sobretudo referentes à epidemiologia, à transmissão, aos aspectos clínicos e à patogenicidade do parasita 1 7 . Com relação ao diagnóstico, também se tem dificuldades, pois ainda que se saiba o exame direto é a melhor técnica. Alguns centros não fazem o diagnóstico devido a diferentes causas, tais como falta de conhecimento do pessoal, uso da técnica incorreta ou simplesmente não concedem importância a seu achado 1 8 .A taxonomia do parasita também é indefinida. Em 1996, estudos mediante análise filogenética do RNA ribossomal, incluíram o parasita dentro dos Stramenopiles, um complexo grupo de protozoários 18 . Mais recentemente, essa observação preliminar foi confirmada utilizando-se dados de seqüências moleculares múltiplas 3 .Embora seja um protozoário polimórfico, se descrevem quatro formas principais: vacuolar, granular, amebóide e o estágio de cisto. A primeira é a mais freqüentemente observada nas fezes, sendo, portanto, a utilizada para fazer o diagnóstico 8 .O objetivo do estudo foi determinar a prevalência de B. hominis em pacientes atendidos no Posto de Saúde de Soledad no Estado Anzoátegui, na Venezuela, no período março-agosto de 2003. A comunidade é de tipo rural, localizada na margem esquerda do rio Orinoco. Em geral, o padrão de vida é considerado como baixo.As amostras fecais recebidas foram preservadas em formol a 10% e avaliadas dentro das 48 horas seguintes mediante a técnica de sedimentação espontânea 2 . Para verificar a morfologia do protozoário, as amostras positivas foram avaliadas novamente um mês depois.Foram estudadas amostras de 98 pacientes, sendo a maioria (67,3%) menores de 10 anos. A média de idade foi de 12 anos com desvio padrão de 17,1 anos, e 52% eram do sexo feminino e 48% do masculino. A prevalência de parasitoses intestinais foi de 58,2% (57/98). A maioria dos infectados estava na faixa etária de 0 a 9 anos, embora essa diferença não tenha sido significativa (χ 2 = 3,71; g.l. = 5 p > 0,05). Ambos os sexos foram igualmente afetados (p > 0,05). Blastocystis hominis es un protozoario polimórfico de posición taxonómica incierta y rol patogénico controversial. Hasta finales de la década de los años 80, no se informaba rutinariamente en los resultados de los exámenes coproparasitológicos, pues sólo representaba un problema de diagnóstico diferencial. Incluso no era nombrado en la literatura médica especializada. Actualmente esto ha cambiado debido a las evidencias que apoyan su patogenicidad.
