Phenacylidenetriphenylphosphorane reacts with HgI2 in 2 : 3 molar ratio to form a novel trinuclear iodobridged symmetrical complex whose structure has been elucidated by IR, multinuclear NMR, and X-ray crystallography. The Hg···Hg distance [3.648(1) Å] indicates a negligible bonding interaction between the mercury atoms.
Interaction between polymer molecules is a phenomenon of considerable importance because of its resemblance to some of the biological processes. Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), a water-soluble polymer and a blood-plasma substituent l) binds small molecules like dyes, alcohols, etc.2). Molyneux and Frank" have studied the interaction of aromatic molecules with PVP and suggested that the hydrophobic bonding is themain driving force and the association is typically endothermic. Interpolymer adducts were formed through hydrogen bonding when an aqueous solution of PVP was mixed with an aqueous solution of poly(methacry1ic acid) (PMAA), poly(acry1ic acid) (PAA), or poly(ethy1ene oxider). They can also be produced by polymerizing a monomer in the presence of a suitable polymer (e.g., polymerizing acrylic acid in the presence of PVP)'). In this association of polymer molecules, other factors like hydrophobic interaction, co-operative effects, etc., were also said to play a significant role. A calorimetric study on the formation of polymer complexes formed between PVP and PMAA has earlier been carried out by Tsuchida et aL6). The mechanism of polymerization of methacrylic acid or acrylic acid in the presence of PVP has been investigated by many workers'). Recently, we have proposed a twostage process in which the polymerization of methacrylic acid is followed by interpolymer adduct formation8).This communication reports on the influence of the methyl group on the crystallinity of an interpolymer adduct formed between PVP and poly(acry1ic acid)s using X-ray measurements.
Experimental PartPVP, obtained from SD's chemicals, Bombay, with a molecular weight of 24 OOO was used. PAA and PMAA were prepared by polymerizing distilled acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, a) Present address: Radiation Laboratory, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
