Formation of a Trinuclear Mercury(II) Complex Mediated by a Phosphorane: Molecular Structure of [Hg{Hg(I)(Ph3PCHCOPh)(μ-I)2}2]

Abstract: Phenacylidenetriphenylphosphorane reacts with HgI2 in 2 : 3 molar ratio to form a novel trinuclear iodobridged symmetrical complex whose structure has been elucidated by IR, multinuclear NMR, and X-ray crystallography. The Hg···Hg distance [3.648(1) Å] indicates a negligible bonding interaction between the mercury atoms.

“…The Hg atom is surrounded by one P atom of the PPh 2 unit, one ylidic C atom and two I atoms. The angles subtended by the ligand at the Hg(II) center in 5 vary from 89.65 (17) [20,32,36,41].…”

“…We have been interested in investigating the different bonding modes adopted by ylides when ligated to Hg(II) and U(VI) [14]. Hg(II) forms C-coordinated complexes with Ph 3 P@ C(H)C(O)Ph [15,16] and Ph 3 P@C(H)CO(OEt) [17]. On the other hand, regiospecific O-coordination of the acetyl oxygen has been observed for the reaction of Hg(II) halides with Ph 3 P@C(COPh)(COMe).…”

“…The dimeric structure adopted by complexes 1, 2 and 3 is in contrast to the C-coordinated trinuclear mercury (II) complex of the phosphorus ylide Ph 3 PCHCOPh [9], but are similar to the structure of trans-Di-l-iodo-diiodobis(triphenylphosphoniumcyclopentadienylide)dimercury (II) reported by Baenziger et al [10] and the C-coordinated dinuclear mercury (II) halide complexes of Ph 3 PCHCOPh (BPPY) [11]. Tables 2-4 list key bond lengths and angles for complexes 1, 2 and 3, respectively.…”
