The use of continuous cooling bainitic steels can provide a more energy efficient manufacturing route. However, for their use in mechanical components like gears, it is necessary to improve their surface properties without impacting the core properties to guarantee reliable mechanical performance. The effect of temperature and time on the plasma nitriding response of a DIN 18MnCrSiMo6-4 steel was investigated. The plasma nitriding was performed for 3, 6 and 9 hours, at 400, 450, 500 and 550 °C, using a gas mixture composed of 76 vol.% nitrogen and 24 vol.% hydrogen. Samples were characterized before and after plasma nitriding concerning the microstructure, hardness and microhardness, fracture toughness, phase composition and residual stress states. Based on the results presented, layer growth constants (k) for different temperatures was determined. Moreover, it could be found that 500 °C gave the best results investigated here, as higher temperature took to core and surface hardness decrease. The nitrided samples with thicker compound layers presented a fracture behavior dominated by the formation of Palmqvist cracks. X-ray phase analysis indicated the formation of biphasic compound layer on the surface of all nitrided samples. The diffusion zone presented compressive residual stresses with highest values near the surface.

Thermomechanical processing of low carbon bainitic steels is used to obtain a bainitic microstructure with good strength and toughness by continuous cooling after forging without the need of further heat treating, hence reducing manufacturing costs. However, hot forging parameters can significantly influence the microstructure in the forged material. A series of heat treating and forging experiments was carried out to analyze the effect of austenitizing time and temperature on the grain growth and the effect of forging temperature on the Prior Austenite Grain Size (PAGS) and continuously cooled microstructure. The forged microstructures were characterized by optical microscopy, microhardness tests, and X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that at 1200 °C austenitizing temperature abnormal grain growth takes place. Forging temperature significantly affects the PAGS and the subsequently formed microstructure. At high forging temperature (1200 °C), an almost fully bainitic microstructure was obtained. As the forging temperature was reduced to 1100 and 1000 °C, the PAGS refined, while the polygonal ferrite faction increased and the amount of retained austenite decreased. Further evaluations showed that a decrease in the forging temperature results in a higher carbon concentration in solution in the retained austenite leading to a stabilization effect.

RESUMO No cenário produtivo atual, toma-se cada vez mais importante avaliar o processo de fabricação como um todo e levar em conta que cada etapa em uma rota de fabricação terá alguma influência no produto final para assim minimizar perdas na produção. O presente trabalho visou caracterizar os efeitos do método corte cisalhante (tesoura) realizado durante o processo de trefilação combinada de barras de aço AISI 1045. Um entendimento mais aprofundado dos efeitos provocados pelo corte no material recebido do processo permitirá a avaliação da necessidade ou não de se remover a ponta cortada por cisalhamento para a fabricação de um billet para o forjamento. Para isso, realizou-se uma caracterização microestrutural, de microdureza e tensões residuais com o uso de difração de raios-X. Os resultados indicam que as influências vão muito além das deformações de grãos observadas através de metalografia, apresentando efeitos significativos em termos de tensões residuais superficiais até uma distância de aproximadamente 30 mm em relação à face cortada.

ResumoAliar qualidade do produto final e otimização dos custos de produção é o que toda indústria de componentes mecânicos almeja. Um dos problemas enfrentado na produção de eixos automotivos é o surgimento das distorções de formas, e saber as causas dessas distorções vem se tornando cada vez mais imprescindíveis. Dentre os processos de fabricação, o tratamento térmico é conhecido como uma etapa da produção que potencializa os efeitos dos potenciais de distorção acumulados ao longo da cadeia. As tensões residuais são consideradas um dos principais potenciais de distorção e, por isso, é de grande importância o seu entendimento. Sendo assim, o presente artigo, inserido no âmbito do projeto "Investigation and improvement of a manufacturing process chain from cold drawing processes to induction hardening", realiza uma análise das distorções e da distribuição das tensões residuais após a têmpera por indução e uma análise das tensões residuais após o processo de retífica durante a fabricação de eixos automotivos de aço ABNT 1045. Foram variados parâmetros nos processos de trefilação e têmpera por indução. A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível verificar a influência da profundidade de camada temperada, onde a maior camada apresentou, em média, maiores distorções. STUDY OF DISTORTION AND RESIDUAL STRESSES DISTRIBUTIONS IN INDUCTION HARDENING SHAFTS AbstractConnect product quality and production costs optimization is the aim of mechanical components industries. One of the problems faced in the automotive shafts production is the shapes distortions, and knowing the causes of these distortions is becoming increasingly essential. Heat treatment is known as a production step that potentiates the accumulated effects of distortion potential along the production chain. Residual stresses are considered one of the major distortion potentials. Therefore, their understanding is very important. The present article, as part of the project "Investigation and improvement of a manufacturing process chain from cold drawing processes to induction hardening", makes an analysis of the distortions and the residual stresses distribution after induction hardening and analysis of residual stresses after grinding process during the automotive shafts manufacture with ABNT 1045 steel. Drawing and induction hardening parameters were varied in order to understand their effects. From the results obtained, it was possible verify the influence of the depth of hardened layer, where deeper layer showed, on average, higher distortions.

ResumoUma ferramenta de trefilação deve suportar as altas tensões a que fica submetida durante o processo sem apresentar deformações. Para isso, o projeto da fieira deve iniciar com a escolha correta do material de fabricação e um dimensionamento adequado. Tais fatores podem minimizar a ocorrência de falhas, tanto na fieira, quanto no produto trefilado, assim como diminuir as tensões e desgaste na ferramenta. Portanto, este estudo visa analisar as regiões de uma ferramenta de trefilação industrial que estão sujeitas as maiores amplitudes de tensões ao longo de um processo de trefilação. O método de elementos finitos foi utilizado para simular a trefilação de uma barra de aço utilizando uma ferramenta de carbeto de tungstênio. O perfil da fieira foi inserido no software e então analisado em diferentes etapas ao longo do processo de trefilação e após o seu término. Observou-se a ocorrência de tensões compressivas superiores a 600 MPa na região de trabalho e as maiores tensões trativas foram visualizadas na região de saída, com valores próximos a 200 MPa. COLD DRAWING TOOL ANALYSIS THROUGH FINITE ELEMENT METHOD AbstractA drawing die tool must support the high stresses during the process without presenting deformations. For this, the die tool design should start with the correct choice of manufacturing material and proper sizing. Such factors can minimize the occurrence of failures in the drawn product and in the die, as well as reduce stress and wear. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the regions of a industrial drawing tool which are subject to higher amplitudes of stress along a drawing process. The finite element method was used to simulate the drawing of a steel bar using a tungsten carbide die. The industrial die parameters were the input to create a simulation model and then analyzed at different steps along the drawing process and after its termination. The results shown the occurrence of compressive stresses higher than 600 MPa in the reducing zone. The maximum tensile stresses were observed in the back relief, with values close to 200 MPa. There is no residual stresses in the drawing die tool after the end of the process, as was expected.
