The different responses of improved genotypes to alterations of the availability of nutrients indicate that it is possible to modulate the nutritional efficiency by exploring the interaction between the intrinsic response of a genotype and the level of nutrient supply. The objective of this research was to assess the response of genotypes of Coffea arabica L., from different parental lineages, to contrasting environments for N supply, using parameters of growth and nutritional efficiency indexes to explore a possible increase in the nutritional efficiency. The experiment followed a 3×3 factorial scheme, in a completely randomized design, with 3 improved genotypes (Acauã, Katipó and Topázio) and 3 environments with different levels of N availability in the soil (50, 100 and 200% of the recommended supply). The growth and nutritional efficiency of C. arabica is influenced by the effects of the intrinsic differences among genotypes and can be modulated by changes in the environment, based on the response to different supplies of N in the soil. Genotypes from different parental linages are able to present highly contrasting responses to the fertilization with N, indicating a high variability to be explored. Among the studied genotypes, Topázio presents higher accumulation of biomass and high nutritional efficiency for absorbing, translocating and using N in environments with low fertility; while Acauã presents higher efficiency in environments with higher N supply.
<p><strong>Background:</strong> Shade crops emerge as an alternative to reduce the effects of global climate change in conventional agriculture. <strong>Objective:</strong> To analyze the ecophysiological responses of coffee cultivation (<em>Coffea arabica</em> L.) under different shading conditions. <strong>Methodology:</strong> Four treatments were established: coffee in full sun, coffee with shade of cassava (<em>Manihot esculenta</em> Crantz.), coffee with shade of banana (<em>Musa </em>sp. var Nanicon) and coffee with shade of palm (<em>Euterpe edulis</em>), in a completely randomized design with six replicates. In each treatment, the crops of cassava, banana and palm were planted in a center line between the lines of the coffee crop. The evaluation was carried out at 1:00 pm, and the variables studied were net assimilation rate of carbon (<em>A</em>), stomatal conductance (<em>g</em>s), transpiration rate (<em>E</em>), subestomatic concentration of CO2 (<em>C</em>i), vapor pressure deficit (DPV), instantaneous efficiency of water use (<em>A/E</em>), intrinsic efficiency of water use (<em>A/g</em>s) and instantaneous efficiency of carboxylation (<em>A/ C</em>i). <strong>Results: </strong>under shaded conditions, Coffee, showed the highest values for the net assimilation rate of carbon, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, instantaneous efficiency carboxylation, instantaneous efficiency of water use, intrinsic efficiency in water use, and reduced vapor pressure deficit, compared to growing in full sun. <strong>Implications.</strong> Growing coffee under shaded conditions improves its photosynthetic activity and makes more efficient use of water, this type of conduction being an interesting option for places with high insolation and with problems of water availability. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> The ecophysiological variables are influenced by the shading conditions, being that the shade provided by the banana favored the obtaining of higher values for the variables analyzed in the coffee crop.</p>

AbstractStudies of energy flow in agroecosystems are very important in agricultural production worldwide, in order to achieve a more sustainable agriculture. The objective of this study was to characterize the energy efficiency and to perform a quality diagnosis of cotton in a cultivation system in Lima, Peru. Participatory methodologies have been adopted to promote greater interaction between farmers and researchers to obtain information about the agroecosystem. The energy balance was achieved by the ratio between achieved production (output) and energy expenditure (input). The quality diagnosis was constructed through the scores observed by the farmer. In conclusion, the cotton cultivation system presented an unsatisfactory positive energy balance and low quality diagnosis related to nutritional factor, weed competition and afforestation.
