Biodiversity is one of the most fundamental properties of Nature. It underpins the stability of ecosystems, provides vast bioresources for economic use, and has important cultural significance for many people. The Pampa biome, located in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, illustrates the direct and indirect interdependence of humans and biodiversity. The Brazilian Pampa lies within the South Temperate Zone where grasslands scattered with shrubs and trees are the dominant vegetation. The soil, originating from sedimentary rocks, often has an extremely sandy texture that makes them fragile—highly prone to water and wind erosion. Human activities have converted or degraded many areas of this biome. In this review we discuss our state-of-the-art knowledge of the diversity and the major biological features of this regions and the cultural factors that have shaped it. Our aim is to contribute toward a better understanding of the current status of this special biome and to describe how the interaction between human activities and environment affects the region, highlighting the fragility of the Brazilian Pampa
Objetivo: o avanço maxilomandibular é um método cirúrgico comumente usado no tratamento de pacientes acometidos pela Síndrome da Apnéia Obstrutiva do Sono (SAOS) e portadores de anormalidades anatômicas identificáveis neste complexo, que estreitam e/ou obstruem o espaço aéreo. O intuito deste estudo foi analisar variações cefalométricas do espaço aéreo faríngeo em indivíduos Classe II de Angle, após a cirurgia ortognática. Metodologia: a amostra consistiu de telerradiografias laterais equivalentes aos períodos pré e pós-operatório de 30 indivíduos, divididos no grupo com avanço cirúrgico mandibular (n=15) e no grupo com avanço maxilomandibular (n=15). Os parâmetros cefalométricos usados permitiram avaliar o espaço aéreo posterior em 3 níveis: a hipofaringe (PFI-V), a orofaringe (PFM-PM, PFM-PO, PFM-U, PFM-Up) e a nasofaringe (PFM-PN, pm-PFS). A análise esquelética foi na base do crânio (N-S-Ba) e na mandíbula (Ar-Go-Me). A média das diferenças entre os valores pré e pós-operatórios das mensurações lineares (mm) e angulares (graus) foi avaliada pelo teste t pareado. Resultados e Conclusões: estatisticamente, não houve redução do espaço aéreo faríngeo pós-avanço cirúrgico. O que se observou foi que apenas PFM-PO e PFS-pM se mantiveram constantes e na maioria restante os valores aumentaram.

The nasolabial cyst is classified as a fissural cyst, found outside the bone, and on the region corresponding to the nasolabial furrow and alar nose. This cyst is frequently asymptomatic with the most usual sign being alar nose elevation. In spite of the low occurrence of nasolabial cysts, it is important to recognize the clinical characteristics of this lesion. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature and discuss the histomorphology and etiology of this condition, showing treatment by surgical excision.
Gardner syndrome is a rare autosomal-dominant condition characterized by the presence of intestinal polyposis, multiple osteomas, and tumors of the hard and soft tissues. This paper describes a patient of Gardner syndrome with unusual maxillofacial manifestation with presence of fibromyxomatous injury in jaw, coronoid hyperplasia, and multiple osteomas diffusely distributed in the craniomaxillofacial skeleton. Imaging examinations have identified craniofacial manifestations and the patient was referred to the gastroenterologist who confirmed the diagnosis of Gardner syndrome. The early diagnosis of this syndrome is important since intestinal polyps have high potential for malignant transformation. It is therefore essential that dentists are familiar with the maxillofacial features of this condition, since they precede the intestinal polyposis and encourage early diagnosis. In addition to classic maxillofacial signs of this syndrome, one must consider that, although it is rare, other injuries may be present such as those described in this clinical patient.
