The recent enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI) is due principally to advances in deep learning. Deep learning methods are remarkably accurate, but also opaque, which limits their potential use in safety-critical applications. To achieve trust and accountability, designers and operators of machine learning algorithms must be able to explain the inner workings, the results and the causes of failures of algorithms to users, regulators, and citizens. The originality of this paper is to combine technical, legal and economic aspects of explainability to develop a framework for defining the "right" level of explainability in a given context. We propose three logical steps: First, define the main contextual factors, such as who the audience of the explanation is, the operational context, the level of harm that the system could cause, and the legal/regulatory framework. This step will help characterize the operational and legal needs for explanation, and the corresponding social benefits. Second, examine the technical tools available, including post hoc approaches (input perturbation, saliency maps...) and hybrid AI approaches. Third, as function of the first two steps, choose the right levels of global and local explanation outputs, taking into the account the costs involved. We identify seven kinds of costs and emphasize that explanations are socially useful only when total social benefits exceed costs. arXiv:2003.07703v1 [cs.CY]

Based on an automated textual analysis of 40,000 film reviews posted by 18,000 French contributors on a web-based platform providing information on cinema, this article examines the relationship between the status of contributors (number of reviews posted, length of time of subscription to the site) and the type of reviews posted (choice of films, date of publication, models of argumentation, and modes of ratings). The study identifies two strongly contrasting reviewing models (film-centered and reception-centered) and shows that the regularity of practice significantly influences reviews, with regard to both form and content. The more often an author posts reviews, the closer the critique will be to the norms and formats of a professional critique. This finding challenges the idea that an online amateur critique can undermine the hierarchies of evaluation of cultural goods.
:The way of making oral presentations has changed fast over the twenty last years. Based originally on internal memory, oral discourse has been augmented by external supports, first dedicated to the presenter and then shared with the audience. Nowadays, almost every oral presentation -especially in the corporate world -comes with a slide show. These slide decks and their usage raise a paradox: why do they continue their irresistible growth while they are criticized by so many, and indeed have substantial drawbacks? We explain why PowerPoint documents are an adaptation to the context of attention economy, for the writer, the presenter and the audience. This point can be taken into account to improve the use of PowerPoint, we show how. Keywords : PowerPoint, genre, digital communication, activity, TIC at work place.
